2007 Shelby GT500

Thought some people might be interested to see the new Cobra Mustang. This time around, Shelby teamed up with SVT to create the GT500 Cobra. They used a similar engine from the Lincoln Navigator/2000.5 Mustang Cobra R (5.4L DOHC) and mated a supercharger to it. They're looking at 450hp and 450 ft-lb of torque. This is serious business.

I just completed my New Model Training for the GT (I'm at a Lincoln dealer so timing for me wasn't critical.) They haven't come out with the training for this one yet. I'm just waiting for the day I get to uh... verify a repair, yeah, that's it - test drive a repair... :D

Cool! Do they let you guys get by with weekend "loaners" every once in a while? I wouldn't mind cruisin in a brand new lincoln for a while... payment free. :)

Yeah, several months ago I read an article in Motortrend about the car having closer to 500hp as to compete with the new Z06. In the FoMoCo article about this car, they talked about SVT also working on heritage Mustangs like the Bullitt and Mach I that we've seen in years past.

As for the price, that sounds about right. The base Mustang is around 20k, the GT is about 25k, and the aftermarket Mustangs (Saleen, Steeda, Roush, etc) start around 50k.

On a side note, the Saleen S281SC (also supercharged) is expected to put out 400hp and the S281E should put out 500hp--both using the 4.6L 281ci block. So, for the first time in a long while, Ford's in-house tuner is going to outpower the aftermarket tuners.

Finally, this makes me think: when is the current horsepower war going to end? A couple years from now, are we going to have 650hp Corvettes and Mustangs?

If it goes for 40k I'll be impressed... after looking at new mustangs and seeing 45-50k on a saleen (nice looking car, but overpriced in my opinion and the seats weren't comftorable) I wished to see a hot mustang at the right price.

I'm not a fan of the Cobra being used as a model designation. In the original Mustangs it was an engine designation.

The Cobra Jet package consisted of a "shaker" air cleaner that protruded through the hood (except the 429 Super Cobra Jet which had a hood mounted scoop).

The GT series was nice. There was three catagories of GT
the GT, The Shelby GT-350 and the Shelby GT-500.

It'll prolly go for $39,995 or something like that. The under $40k price tag has been one of the biggest things theyver been saying, other than the power.

It looks like they will eventually hit a driveability ceiling like the Corvettes hit in the mid to late 60's. Of course, it will be a lot higher ceiling due to improvements in clutches, and suspensions systems, etc., since then.

If gas prices don't stop their march forward, they are going to hit another ceiling, and we'll be back to the early 80's again. Lets have a moment of silent contempt for 55mph limits, 85mph speedo's, and 4 cylinder engines. :(

Hey, back in the early 70s, the era that spawned Vegas and Pintos and Chevettes and Mustang IIs, it wasn't a matter of fuel price, but in many instances, availability. We'd all better cross our fingers.
