Noise...Could it be an Exhaust leak?
 

I have a strange noise more noticable when idle cold, or on hard acceleration. The engine sounds loud, like the muffler is going. Only, the buzzing/leaking is coming from towards the front of the car. (like underneath of where the driver sits or slightly forward) Any ideas what it could be? I have an appt my my Subie Dealer in a couple weeks.

Exhaust leaks are often worse when the exhaust system is cold (contraction of the metal opens up a small gap between parts), so its a good bet your car has an exhaust leak.

I am all to familiar with cat buzzing. It comes from the area you describe. You can lift up your shifter surround to get a better idea. Oh wait, I can't remember what kind of access you get with the auto shifter. It's real easy with a MT. Or jack up your car, start the engine, get under the car and hit the gas with a golf club or something. Shouldn't be too hard to pinpoint.
