front diff. replacement????
 

ok so i found out (thanks to you guys) that my pinion bearing in my front diff. is bad... so i was wondering if it is easier to replace the whole front diff. or to replace the pinion bearing only? and if i was to replace the whole front diff. how do i do it. does the tranny have to come out?is there a certin front diff. that i would need or will anything out of a subaru fit? i know that the diff. comes befor the tranny so i am thinking that there is enough room to squeez the front diff out without taking the tranny out. i really do not want to take apart the front diff. just to replace the bearing unless that is alot easier..? :confused: i could really use some of your guyses expertees. :)

And make sure to change both the ring gear and pinion gear. They are a matched set and both need to be replaced or else premature failure is likely to happen.

I believe the differential has to be one out of an svx unless you want to replace the rear diff as well.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong as I can't remember for sure if the gearing is in the transmission or the front diff. If the gearing is set by the trans and not the front diff than there are a lot of options for replacing the front diff.

If you use an SVX front diff, you can leave the rear diff alone. If you use a diff out of any other car, You will need to get the rear diff from the same car and convert the LSD carrier from the SVX rear into the new one. There is a writeup on how to do the LSD conversion in svxfiles' signature.

so say i get a front diff with a 4.11..... and a rear diff. with a 4.11 LSD there would be no need to convert the LSD from my origional rear diff to the new diff. right?

No thats still no good. The SVX has a pretty unique rear differential with a viscous LSD. It is the only model subaru that ever got them in the states... Needless to say, no USDM rear diff is going to match the axles... hence why you will need to modify the rear diff

well i got a 4.44 LSD rear diff for my girlfriends SVX and igot new axles for it too???? will that be good or wont the axle match up with the car?

Axles have different CV sup sizes and they will not fit into the hubs... Like I said, you NEED to convert the rear to the SVX LSD. There is no way around it
