engine broke :(

well guys, it's true, the engine went ca-poot. Well, at least for the time being.

I had driven about 60 miles with the windows down to go get my g/f and her sister at the airport. They didn't want the windows down, so i turned on the air. Drove for about 4 mins or so, and the windows started to fog up. I turned on the defrost with the air conditioning on(odd that it fogged to begin with) when about 15 secs later, the engine died. I looked at the gauges, every light seemed to be on, 0 RPM, and the engine temperature was at max hot. I glided to a stop, and popped the hood. Just really hot temps but no bad smells. The coolent was near the top at this time. Waited a few minutes for the temp to go down, but the engine will just crank over but won't start. Maybe not getting gas or air? When it cooled off, the coolent was down quite a bit. Had to get it towed on a flat bed to the subaru dealership(only a few blocks away as i found out). Subaru isn't open till Monday, so who knows what happened. Had to call the g/f's parents to drive about an hour to come get us.

Anyone know what might be wrong? The tow truck driver looked it over for a while, didn't look like any belts broke...well, at least none near the front. Any help would be great so i might know what to expect.
And yes, i had plenty of gas in the car. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure, but if you overheated it to the point that it stalled and won't restart it's going to be expensive.

Could be the water pump, then a ripped t-belt...it did that on mine, but it never got that hot.

sounds like a water pump to me as well. pray the head/block etc. are o.k.

Poss cause

I work at a Subaru Dealer and see this several times, in most cases it's the waterpump which could have possibably taken out the timing belt.

Once the service advisor gives you the diag. post it so I can refer
to my master tech. (he owns a svx) Good luck and don't authorize
nothing untill you get a full explaination.

its unanimous. i had the exact same problem a short while ago. water pump it is. and mine actually got hot enough smoke came from the timing case because it still ran for 6 miles. burnt my belt and i had to clean all my pulleys. bummer. get a new pump from 1stsubaruparts.com if you dont have any other options. get some gaskets from the dealer. min arrived fast and looked good. installing it will be pricey if nobody you know can do it. its not fun. the worst part is getting the cams back in alignment.

its not over yet. youll also want to check the bolts holding your timing pulleys. one of mine broke a few weeks ago due to the stress of my water pump failing. this cause my new belt to rub and tear thru the actual case. ruff stuff.

well, thanks everyone for the advice. the tech will be working on it later today(monday) and i'll chime in when they give me some details. Hope that not too much went out and won't cost too much. We'll see. Thanks again

$770

Well, looks like $770 so far. They said the waterpump did indeed freeze and took out the timing belt. $110 for the pump, $110 for the timing belt, and $550 for labor! Ouch... They said there is a possibility of engine damage to the gaskets but they said they wouldn't know until they replaced those two parts. Oh geez, this isn't fun. :(

NikFu S. 07-22-2003 03:00 PM

thats better than what i got. i took it in and they wanted to change my oil pump and all my gaskets. flew above 1G. if you can find someone to do your water pump (its not hard) for cheap or free (like i did;) ) youll be running in no time.
if thats a possibility and towing isnt expensive than you could tow it to a friend, install the water pump, tow it back to the dealer to install the belt and time it correctly (unlike me:rolleyes: ) then put the rest back together yourself.

kind of complex but its just a thought.

From this description I'm guessing you work at Hodges? Tell Ben, Greg, Chin, Ge, John, and Bill I said "Hey!"

Re: 770.00

I'm in Detroit and our labor rate is $86.00 per hr and that sounds
a tad bit high. You can request an aftermarket belt (Goodyear
gatorback) which is more than satisfactory. I would also ask what
labor guide the the time comes from then cross reference.
Good luck and keep us informed

 :(

If you do any work yourself, you should be able to do this.
The water pump and timing belt are easy to do if you have a little mechanical know how, I'd also replace the oil pump while you've got the front off.....I didn't.....but now I have to.....wish I had done it when I was in there:rolleyes:

By the way, I got my T-Belt on E-Bay for about $35, and got a rebuilt water pump for $38, and have now ordered a new oil pump from Kervan Subaru for $103....so it can be done without spending too much;)

how long have you had that rebuilt water pump huck? i didnt get that crazy affordable one because i thought it might not be as high quality. its workin out pretty good?

also dont forget the gaskets. they come separate. my entire underbody is covered in oil from a leaky pump.
