Knock Sensors
I got a PM from a member who was very active here and needed some help. If you can help us out, please let me know. Thanks
"I want to know the location of the knock sensors. Would I need two, or would the "code" tell me which side to replace. I tried the information and parts pages here but my poor eyes could have just missed the exploded drawing if there is one. Any help in the where to look catagory would be great and much appreciated. Is there someone who I should be really asking if not you? Thanking you in advance." |
I can help with the location... I think the code will tell you which side but I don't know how to differentiate the two.

Knock sensor help needed
This seems like a perfect thread to join based on my current situation. The picture showing the location of the two knock sensors shows the top of the engine removed. Is this the manifolds? Can I safely do this with regular tools. I started to replace both sensors last night. I removed the alternator and I actually replaced the one on the left. The one on the right has proved to tough. I used my extension to remove the old one but I can't unplug the wiring. The plug is basically over twelve years stuck in there. The one I replaced I had to chip away at the old sensor plastic plug to get it out. I definitely need more room to get at this sensor on the right. Please give me any suggestions on what I can do to finish this job. The one on the left that I replaced I wasn't able to get my torque wrench on it to tighten it properly just an end wrench. Thanks.

You only need basic tools and alot of patience to remove the intake manifold.
You'll want some spare vacuum hose when you remove it because most of the hoses under there will be brittle and crack. This is also the perfect time to replace the PCV valve and clean out the gunk in the intake. Here's a thread on intake removal http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...intake+removal |
once you've got the driver's side knock sensor unbolted you should be able to pull the entire sensor out of the back side of the intake. The key is getting your hand down below the TB on the driver's side the locating the wiring harness the sensor plugs into.
