Interchangeability..

Recently I had to order a new CV boot for my SVX. Now I'm looking into changing my rear wheel bearings. I was just curious if I could source parts such as the boots and bearings from an impreza or legacy? The reason for asking is the CV boots for an impreza are about $8 cheaper.

Just get a whole new half shaft from autozone. They're cheap, and htey have a lifetime warranty.

That is the best way to go and the least expensive as well. :)

I only paid $20 for the boot and bnads. I was just curious for future trips since they might have the Impreza parts instock and I won't have to wait 5 days for a boot that'll take 30 min to install. As for the bearings... just thought it'd be easier to find Impreza or Legacy bearings on Ebay.

Do you have a confirmed part number?

Advanced Auto part # PA 3363694
Front Axle
About $60

I replaced the boots myself rather then buying new half axles. I once bought 1/2 axles from autozone and they clicked just as bad as the old ones. I will never buy rebuilt ones from them again.

I have since repaired my own joints by buying the CV joint componenets and replacing them. At least this way your sure the job is done right. Only thing is, it's very time consuming and extremely messy. Next time I will probably try and get the half axles from somewhere besides the big chains stores. Cost saving of buying new boots/bands/grease vs. buying new axle is only around 20-30 bucks. Time savings, for someone like me, would have been around 4 hours.

If you end up buying a boot kit or just boots, I highly recommend buying some extra grease from the dealership. This is probably the only thing I'd ever recommend getting from the dealership as their markup on parts is astronomical, sometimes 400%! However, they sell a band/grease kit that comes with lots of grease and both bands for a resonable price.

I can't imagine the impreza boots are much different. Only way to tell is to try and fit them up. You can always return them to the store if they don't work. I like your line of thought. Good luck!:)

I don't think it's worth swapping out the whole axel for a simple little tear in the boot. I'm not having any issues because of the cut.

Another company to check out is http://www.raxles.com/

They shipped front axles for my 92. You ship them back your old axles in the shipping cox for core credit. When I ordered them, they waived the core charge with my assurance that I would send back the old axle.

Lifetime warranty too. Great people to deal with.

I just contacted Raxel to see what they're asking for a set of fronts. If the price is right I might just swap out my axels.

I do. If ANYTHING got into that cut, your grease is going to be abrasive, and it will wear away at the joint itself. The good news is once you purchase a lifetime warrantied axle, if you ever get the slightest cut you can get a new one. Free. :)

Seriously check out adance auto, or autozone. They have warehouses all over the country, so it doesn't take long to get one shipped to your area. Another place to check out is www.rockauto.com. They also have a lot of lifetime warranty parts, and 90% of the time they have the absolute lowest price. I'm not connected to them, but I will priase them a lot. They don't have any 'stores', so basically they cut out the middle man completely. It goes from generic auto parts warehouse to your door. :)

I got mine from napa for $63 each side. Life time warranty.

I also vouch for RockAuto! I've purchased parts for a few vehicles from them, nothing for an SVX yet . . .

Bringing up Napa is a good point. Most of the time they can get the part the next day. LIke today I wanted to get some Royal Purple gear oil and they were out of stock but I'll have 2 QTs by tom after work.:D This is after going to Off Road Warehouse, Pep Boys, and the Auto Port on base.
