When does the timing belt need changing ?
 

Has 112K on the clock. Checking the prior owners dealer's records, the timing belt was changed at 85K. When would it have to be changed again ?

Should be good for 100k, as long as you don't have any major oil leaks up front......but doubt your waterpump will last that long:rolleyes:

Mine was done at about 68K and I have 115K on there now.. It HAS been 6 years since it was done though. I am planning on doing the timing belt with a tune-up as well in a month or less. Would you suggest replacing the water pump at that time as well even if it's not bad?

I would, as several people have had the water pump go out at around 120-130k, and if it goes while you're driving it, it can cause t-belt idler bearing failure, and end up costing more to repair later.

I'd recommend cam seals and crank seal and water pump if you're doing a t-belt and have over 100k on the motor.....the seals are only a few bucks...

Easier to do it all while it's apart than tearing it down twice...:cool:

I usually charge about $125-150 (plus parts)....Subaru charges about $450

The part number I have for the cam seals is 806732150...don't know if that's a subaru number, as I got them from a local parts place...

I can't find the number for th ecrank seal off hand..

As for cam and crank seal, and timing belt, I'm happy with my local parts place, water pump...OEM is great, but a well done rebuilt one should be fine also.....at least to me.

That is the correct Subaru number for the cam seals. They are the same as for the Legacy.

Ordered the parts from Subaruparts.com. Spoke to Trish, very friendly and helpful. Waterpump $95.97, Gasket $2.01, Timing Belt $76.16, 2 cam seals at $6.11, crank seal at $5.64, all OEM new parts. I also decided to replace the Alt belt $13.68 and power steering / AC belt $22.82. Found a mechanic here who will do the whole job for $200.00
The car made it on 112K with the oem water pump which still works. I will stick to OEM. NAPA wanted $136.90 for the water pump. I also ordered the oem top and bottom radiator hose to do at the same time. This should nip some potential problems in the bud.
The tranny is a newly rebuilt Cottman ( Previous Owner), so I will install a B&M cooler and frame mounted filter as well. Try and make the tranny last.

Well the mechanic finished the job yesterday. He was cursing a little bit as he said he wouldn't do the job again for that price. I did cringe a bit when he said the water pump he took off looked new, ouch !!! I knew the timing belt had 30K on it as I had the receipt from the previous owner. She was not sure about the water pump and I could not find it on the work receipts she gave me. Looks like the crank and cam seals were replaced as well. Oh well ! at least I know everything is changed with new OEM parts. Put in the Stage 2 ver 6. ACUtune and it's like a new car. Could not believe the difference. Seems to pull 25% more and no hesitation. Next is new OEM shocks and Dayle's lowering springs , tranny cooler and filter and I'm done.

where about in NC are you, i need a cheap mechanic and i think i might want to replace the water pump/ timing belt soon

My water pump went out at 121k and it was the original. Do the oil seals...timing belt and water pump and you will not have to worry about anything for a longggggg time.

Well, my SVX has 194k and I have owned it since 33k and it still has the original timing belt and water pump which operate fine. I just wish I could say the same for the front seal, cam seals, and valve cover gaskets. They are leaking like crazy! I popped open the timing belt cover and the belt still looks good too, unbelievable! I have all the parts, just gotta find the time to tear into it.
