They're giving cities their own TLDs now? Jeez, how blatantly commercial can you get

On a more positive note, if anyone wants to pay for hosting this would be a good domain name for a California SVX group.

.LA is not for Los Angeles

Anything other than .com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov, .mil are abbreviations for countries.

.la stands for Lao Democratic Republic

some other popular ones you may have seen are:

.tv is for Tuvalu
.cc is for Cocos Islands

You can reserve URLs with these suffixes and make people believe they stand for something else but I thought you'd like to know what they really stand for. Here's a comprehensive list: http://members.nbci.com/exit60/domains.html

Didn't somebody buy Tuvalu's TLD? I thought there were many American TV networks bidding over .tv.

Selling Top Level Domains

I think you're right...some of the country codes have been bought.

The governments of some third-world countries saw that less than 1% of their population had internet access and yet a large percentage were starving. It's probably a good idea for them to sell their Top Level Domain (TLD) and get a few million dollars that can go to good use.

The thing is that most of those governments of the 3rd world counties sell the TLD and the few million that they get do not go to the people who are starving. They go to the alredy fat swiss bank accounts of the leaders of the officials. Sad, but true!
