I'm going to miss the Justy...

The trusty Justy has served me well for the past three years. I love that little car - it's useful, uflinchingly reliable and...and, well, it's not fast...

...I'm just very attached to it. :(

So why am I getting rid of it? Because I just bought this: http://lapshin.net/mr2forsale.html

It's not a huge upgrade, but it should be much, much faster and hopefully competitive in its class once I have it set up well.

I'm actually really excited. I may be replacing my totally reliable, excellent condition daily driver with a nearly 20-year-old car, but I'm really geeked. Plus I had an '87 Toyota pickup and it was an unstoppable truck. The MR2 was really just a Corolla turned around backwards. :p

I was concerned that I wouldn't fit in the car, but my brother is the same height as me and fits comfortably inside. He said he was totally surprised by how much room he had.

Anyway, it looks like the last event I ran in the Justy, which I won, will be its last. Very fitting, I guess. I'll still miss it. Ridiculous how such a simple little car has endeared itself to me in such a way, huh?

Anybody want a Justy in fantastic shape? :(

What kind of MPG does the justy get??

(sorry about the massive pic)

You wont be feeling cramped at all. Mine has more headroom than my Avenger. I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

A friend of mine has a 91MR2 w/ 2.2litre and 5spd. He is really tall about 185cm up or more. He never complained his head would touch the roof. :)

Surprised you gonna sell your Justy? WhY?

Your MR2 is rear-wheel.?! So what you gonna drive in the winter? Legacy or Your SVX?:D

I have to sell the Justy because I don't have the room for it. I suppose I could take the SVX down to FL and retire it to my parents' storage building, but I'd miss it. We just don't have the space for four cars here. I mean, they'd all fit, but it's not worth the hassle.

Thee MR2 will replace the Justy in every capacity - daily driver and autocrosser - which means I'll be driving it in the winter. We don't get a lot of snow here and my commute is exactly 1 mile each way.

As I said, I'm really attached to the Justy, but I just can't justify having three cars to myself all in what little space we have here.

The Justy gets pretty awesome mileage. I've seen between 40 and 50 on the freeway. In town it's difficult to say. Since I only fill it up every month or so, I think evaporation counts for a significant portion of my fuel consumption. ;)

Commuting in Michigan, I'd go 220 miles on about 7 gallons of gas, and the majority of my driving was in town.

Neat. One thing I'm concerned about is where I'm going to put harnesses. I have 4-point harnesses in the Justy, but something tells me they won't work in the MR2 because it doesn't have rear seatbelt mounting points.

Just ask on the MR2OC board. Someone who knows the correct placement and mounting help you out.

Yeah, I spent some time looking up info on that site. MR2OC is actually where I found my Mk1. :)

What I'm trying to find out is whether anybody keeps the factory belts in place. I want 4-point harnesses for racing, but they're no good for street use.

Nice choice Pockets! Welcome to the world of mid-engine sport cars!!!

That car should handle much better than the Justy, but at the limit, oversteer will be more prevalent.

Have fun with your new project car! :)

Yeah, I'm looking forward to that. :)

I feel a little nervous buying a car I've never driven. I mean, I've never driven an MR2, period. :D

How many beers for your Justy?

How's the rust? suspension?

It doesn't have any rust and the suspension's fine.

No, really, it doesn't have any rust. It's only seen two winters.

I'll be advertising the car for $1000, which I consider a minimum for something that runs. :)

is a DL fwd?

Yeah, it's FWD.

I have gone back and forth over the past couple years - one day I want to convert it to 4WD and the next day I don't. It's actually awesome in snow as it is. With the 12" wheels and $25 Guardsman tires from Sears it gets through pretty much anything.

That's priceless...

Those little fwd cars do so well in the snow, no lie. I remember back in college I couldn't get my rwd 300ZX TT up the 1/4 mile sloped driveway to my apt building - and other students driving little fwd Daewoo's or Kias made it up no problem!

Yeah, that's what I'm trading for a RWD mid-engine car.

Of course, we don't have hills and we don't have a lot of snow.

upnygimp 10-07-2004 02:17 PM

Be careful with that thing though.....Its will oversteer but not very controllably due to the rear weight bias. Basically if you upset it too much the rear end swings around like a pendulum. Its not gonna put the rear end out easily like FR cars.

I'm aware of that. Thank you for your concern.

It's not bad in FWD but when you get stuck in FWD mode you just click the 4WD button on the shifter and just keep on going!

Well, the drive took my brother an unfortunate 13 hours instead of the 10 we figured it would, but he got up here safe and sound in my MR2.

I only got a brief drive in it last night to go get gas, but it's a neat littl car. I took it out onto the freeway and on my private test track (a deserted department store parking lot) - I'm amazed how quickly it changes direction and stops. It's also a little faster than I expected, and the 7500RPM redline is alarming. I'm thinking "SHIFTSHIFTSHIFT!!!"

The tires are obviously going to have to be replaced. :)

I'm trying to decide whether I want to do ES or STS2 next season. I'll be in ES for the final two events this season, though.

Anyway, it's in better shape than I expected. Great little car. :D

I would love to get a mk1 MR2 like yours. I sold them back in the day when they were new and they are a friggin blast to drive. I doubt you will have much problem with it in the winter. They are not like traditional rwd cars with no weight in the back end. Some good snows on it and I think you will be pleasantly surprised with how well it does. Old-school VW Bugs were a little more rear-biased weight wise but anyone who owned one can tell you how nearly unstoppable they were in the snow.

You will have a ton-o-fun with your MR2. Enjoy! :)

Johnny
