Official Spring Cleaning/Detailing thread!

So, it's that time once again. Time to do whatever it takes to make those SVX's shine their best, whether it's washing off 5mos of garage dust (like me), or the winter's worth of sand and salt. I personally am stocking up on the important stuff this week in preparations for a full detail next weekend. Wash, wax, clay bar, leather conditioner, etc...

Since I assume I'm not the only one with those plans for the week, I figured it would be a good time to have a master thread for questions and advice about techniques, products, etc...

I myself have a product that's been sitting in my garage for a while now, that I've been a little hesitant to use. So, I figured this would be as good a place as any to see what people think of it. It's TurtleWax's Color Cure polish with Chip Stick. The polish itself is supposed to fill in small scratches and restore shine, and the Chip Stick is supposed to fill in bigger scratches and chips. My paint is for the most part flawless, but there is some imperfections. Mainly, the panel beneath the rear side windows and the mirror's are faded, and I have a lot of smaller rock chips on the hood. I'm hoping the Color Cure really does something to help, and isn't just something that's going to wash off next bath time. Anyone have any experience with this stuff, good, bad, or indifferent? Or, do you have any other secrets for this that you'd be willing to disclose?

Happy Detailing!

Were did you get it? If it is like furiture repair, they say fill in the crack and warm it with a hair dryer to melt it , then rub it out. I bought a color wax SOLD ONLY ON TV not found in stores anywhere, Got it at Job Lots <lol> it worked on a black car Sort of.

It's available pretty much anywhere that sells car care products, and I've seen it around for years. I picked it up from the clearance bin at K-Mart for $2 late last summer. I'm just curious if anyone has actually used it with any success, if it's even worth the effort (or my $2).

I've used the red on a barcelona, with slightly considerable hood chip damage. Worked decent, but the overall shine of the wax wasn't as deep as I was used to with other waxes. The durability of the coating isn't the best. Lasted about 3 weeks I guess.... About that.. Water stops beading pretty quickly.

Hairline scratches disappear without a trace! :)

The red stick is much lighter on Barcelona, and noticable in the hood chips. it does look better than raw chips on your hood from a distance. Up close though, it had the appearance that a 16yo tried to do a repair on the paint. It looked just a little on the cheesy side. The stick chip repair lasted longer than the wax, but disappeared upon rewaxing.

I didn't really have that bad of an opinion on it when I used it. At the time, It was kind of a "ehhh, dat il do.." But actually writing it down..... I guess my opinion looks just a little worse typed out.

The chip stick might do a better job on other colors, but in my opinion, not so hot on the barcelona.

:) For those owning ebony mica SVXii, a black sharpie permanent marker will make scratches & stone chips go bye-bye.

Ron (sensing another Ripimoff Industries product).

Ron

Just sent out a team of X-Sperts to do some testing with that praw-duckt. I believe it was the scribble and sniff pen wasn't it? It will make those chips dissapear before your eyes! :D

Just send your money to Ron at Ripimoff Industries. I am sure he will give all of the details when the experts come back home with the results. ;)

I have used the Turtle wax product and love it. I use it to darken the colors and remove all of the little scratches. Then I put some other wax over that wax for a better lasting shine. :) The colors seem to become richer after it is applied. :) I have not used the pens though. I would think you need to heat to soften them before trying to use it.

Actually, Earl, it's called the Scratch, Sniff 'n Whiff pen soon to be available from Ripimoff Labs, on a first come, first served beta test basis. For only $19.95 ....
Take it from there, Earl. You ARE the product promotion director as you MAY remember.

speaking of detailing

i find the mr. clean auto dry to be quite the handy product, and works really really well imho....

this is coming from a die-hard old-school style detailer,,,, i was so pissed off to find that it worked so good... practically put me out of business

ensteele 04-19-2005 10:21 PM

I didn't have much luck with it at all. Went back to the old method. :o I guess you have to be smarter than the system.

I love mine to, but only for a quick wash on the SVX, or to wash the XT6 or wagon. I still do a full detail on occation, mainly because the Mr. Clean doesn't quite give that deep shine, plus I still enjoy wasting a whole day detailing the car.:)

i can't remember if i even washed the claret in 2005. :(
