Q's about placement for extra trans cooler

i ripped it off an old rally beast ford fairlane 4 litre
where would be the best place to put it?
and which side of the radiator should i connect it through?
i think it will just fit infront of the radiator underneath the back of the grill
and with a cable tie mod should hold in place pretty good
its about 30 centremetres by 15 by 2

I would be cautious about installing a used cooler. Transmission coolers get stuff attached inside of them through heating and cooling that won't come off unless you have a special machine that surges 175f fluid through it. You might see if there is a shop near you that can do this.

yeah thanks nifty i was going to give it a good cleanout before i instal it the fluid was quite black that came out of it but other than that its an almost new condition cooler.

If it was coming out that color I'd pass.

I wouldn't bother. I killed a brand new built race motor 400 miles in to the break-in on the dyno because I reused an oil cooler that I cleaned the bejesus out of. That was a nice $2000 mistake.

If there's crap in there, you'll never get it all out. Maybe on a tranny cooler, it's not as critical as it is on an oil cooler for a race motor, but why risk it. A brand new tranny cooler isn't all that expensive.

ok well ive soaked the cooler in fuel for the last few days and flushed it numerous times both ways its as clean as a whistle now. So next time im near my car il have a look at where im going to fit it , im still not sure which way i should connect it though ? im thinking after the radiator before goin back into the trans

Check the Ho-to Documents for ATF cooler diagrams HERE

When standing in front of your car looking down at the radiator, the ATF comes IN to the radiator cooler on the LEFT side and goes OUT of the cooler on the RIGHT side and back to the transmission.

Your car is a 1992 (with the filter screen inside the cooler). Is it the original radiator or has it ever been replaced?

If it is the original radiator, I would hook it up in parallel. If the radiator cooler ever clogged, you have an alternate source if cooling. Do you have the auxiliary external filter kit installed in your 92? It was part of a Subaru campaign to address cloggng and overheating issues with the early transmissions. It would be a small black filter (like an oil filter) directly under the battery tray.

What rating is your cooler? I would highly recommend the M&M Supercooler 70268, rated at 13,000BTU. Click HERE. It is about the same dimensions as the one you have and will attach to the front of your radiator easily.

Sorry to encroach, but I have the campaign filter installed, does that mean that they removed the filter screen in the radiator too?

As far as the trans cooler goes, like sperry mentioned, you are gambling a lot with a used trans cooler, especially if the fluid was neglected. The hard deposits may not come out even with solvents..... since you are cleaning at room temperature and they were baked on at operating temperature. Maybe you can get a big pot and boil it clean :D

Automatic transmission failures in the early models (1992-1993) were caused by a fine screen filter installed in the transmission cooler, which was located inside the radiator. Debris from normal wear would build up and clog the screen, reducing or stopping automatic transmission fluid flow, thus killing the transmission through overheating. Subaru added the auxiliary ATF filter to these cars to prevent this from happening.

If you have the original radiator (which is doubtful) you still have the screen installed. Subaru just back-flushed the screen to remove any debris and added the filter to collect it before it could enter the cooler again.

Details of the Filter campaign can be found in the Technical Services Bulletin HERE

Subaru later corrected this by removing the screen entirely from the cooler in the radiators. If you ever had your radiator replaced, the screen is no longer there.

thanks svxcess and socal for the help yeah the radiator had been replaced with a new stock radiator when i bought the car the original was in the trunk and had crack across the top of it. no it doesnt have the external filter  but the car has the documentation of the tranny either bieng replaced or reconditioned at 75,000 km and im now on 250,000 i bought it with 220,000, i have been filling the cooler with fuel and leaving it in the sun with the connections plugged so it heats up and then flushing it from both sides for the past few days and im 100% it is clean i have no idea on the rating of the cooler the only thing on it says is "canada , made under one or more of the following US patent numbers 3970237,4028200"

Re: Q's about placement for extra trans cooler

Those pictures in the howto documents for the atf cooler routing have always bothered me. There is no kind of notice on them that they are not svx specific and nobody ever points that out when they post the link. If someone gave me that link and I didn't know better I would hook up my transmission cooler lines backwards because all the howto drawings show the inlet and outlet tubes on the transmission the oposite of how they are on the SVX.
