Cripes! WTF is this???
So I get under the X to do up some oil change and what do I find? I hugetacular DENT smack middle of the oil pan some 4x6 inches and 3/4 deep. Not sure how it got there. Subaru did the last oil change and they never said anything.
I intend to take the pan off and take a look inside. There's a gasket between the pan and the block, right? So I should geta new one before I mess with it? Isn't there an oil pickup screen in there or something? Should I get a new pan or bash this one out with a hammer. I don't think that's really possible, but... --- Possible trauma? I imagine I narrowly avoided disaster on this one. |
Bashing it with a hammer will crack it up. That pan is made out of aluminum, so you need a professional guy heating it up and redo it to its original position.
But I guess it would cost you a lot in labor, so better to get a new one... |
Oh yeah I found the only distributor of Royal Purple in town yesterday and I pull in the guy is like, "So you need some lube for your Talon?" I'm like "asdgasjf My WHAT??"
"Uh, what is it?" "It's a Subaru" "Oh." --- Redline Shockproof or anything related is nowhere to be found. Quote:
If I get a new one, I'll bash it with a hammer anyways. I still need a new radiator so I'm wonder if that is still considered priority. I got one of those lighter plug-in alt/battery gauge tester things so I know my alt isn't harmed, yet. |
Take the pan out and check inside if it is affecting something... if not, just go with the priorities first and leave the pan for other time to change...
Most of the cars over here have damaged pans (except mine :D ), so they mostly do not affect the inside filter... so they keep it until it hits something else and breaks... |
Sounds good.
--- Pics for the curious. Best I could do. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...u_S./33160.jpg http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...u_S./33162.jpg http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...u_S./33161.jpg |

I just need to stop letting other people service my vehicle. |
While we're on the subject of "wtf is this", I was creeping around under the SVX checking things out.
1) What size wrench do you need to get the o2 sensors out 2) What the heck is this stray tube hanging down from nowhere? It seems to be coming from the floor board on the passenger's side. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...u_S./33167.jpg It's just a standard rubber hose. |
The rubber tube is the drain for the AC condenser.
|
Oh so I don't need it. I'll just take it out. ;D
On the o2s, I tried to cram a 19mm on there and it didn't fit, and the only thing I had that was bigger is a 7/8... I guess I'll do a search or check the How Tos.. |
Ok, first of all, the oil pan is not aluminum... why would an oil pan rust if it were aluminum?? Second of all there is no gasket between the pan and the engine. it is a silicone sealant(RTV) use from the factory. You can drop the pan and bang that dent out, just be carefull and maybe use a peice of wood to cushion the blow a little. Then use High temp Silicone(rtv) to replace it. It definately looks like someone jacked up the car on the oil pan.

You can buy a special socket made for the oxygen sensors. I picked one up for 10 dollars at oxygensensor.com
|
What's special about it? What's it's claim to fame?
