A lot of ads outside the US are, and they really hit home. There's another one I'll post up when I get off from work and on a computer.

Option: Grease a dog and mung up the front of your car
Option: Dodge the dog, destroy two cars, accrue one casualty, one critical, one maimed, and go to prison with lives on your conscience.

JUST
HIT
THE DOG.

You guys will no doubt think I am nitpicking here, but that ad is from an anti-speeding campaign in Ireland.

Southern Ireland, aka the Republic of Ireland, which is not the UK.

Just thought I'd mention that.

There is a number of those ads of that realistic type. Some are targeted on the wearing of seat belts, some on drink driving, some on speeding. They are very scary and realistic, and I think they do get the message home at certain levels.

I have an issue with them, it is that they focus too heavily on the carnage caused by high speed crashes, to the exclusion of other causes of accidents such as bad and inattentive driving, driving while overtired and bad road surfaces and road conditions.

To me, this leads into a culture of speed cameras and jackboot policing. The focus should be on surgical targeting of the idiots that drive at rally speeds late at night, often fuelled up on drugs or drink. These are the fools that claim the most lives and have the most single-vehicle accidents.

The majority of people drive well and drive carefully. It's just that it's easier and cheaper for the cops to draw convictions and revenue off the poor fools hurrying to work going 10 per over the limit than it is to actually catch the mad bastards late at night that push up the speeding/fatal accident ratios.

I'm doing my bit to keep the roads safe, I drive carefully and defensively. I'd like to see the police starting to make it difficult for the late night lunatics for a change, and ease up on preaching to the converted.

Re: Street Racing/Speeding

I agree. I may drive a little faster than everyone else but when an idiot pulls up to me and revs his engine expecting a race, there is nothing funnier than the look on their face later then you cruise off at normal speeds in a "sportscar".

But when morons decide to drink and drive it's pathetic. There is a reason why I don't drink in the first place and never have.. This has something to do with it.

Bah, I knew it was one of those Un-American countries :p

I totally agree with you about the whole thing with cops and the normal peopel they pull over. I don't know how it is where you live, but in North Jersey, all the Guidos in their VWs are usually the cause of some terrible accidents due to incredibly poor driving habits. A small percentage of Honda owners and 240 drift king wannabes follow right after. I liked the ad because it didnt cover anything up and make it pretty. If a message were going to get through to anyone, that would probably be the most effective method of delivery, just as this is:

I was just kidding with you man. ;)

These ads are very effective. Right now on the latest ad series there is an appeal from my cousin Martina and her husband for people to drive carefully. They lost their daughter last year in a terrible road accident. Her husband David is saying "I watched her being born, then I had to watch her die at the scene of the accident"

This new appeal is working through people who have been injured in road accidents, or through family members affected by loss.

Even though I have an issue with the focus on speed alone, I would not decry the effectiveness of these ads. They keep us all aware that we are mortal, and we hold people's lives in our hands when we drive.

Drive safe.

Joe

There was a collection of similar anti-speeding and similar ads on a Russian site:

Two ads by Russian traffic department:
http://fishki.net/comment.php?id=40087
The top video is some footage from inside of the car involved in a crash. The bottom two videos are the ads.

Translations of the scripts:

(1st one)

Good when the seat belt is fastened.
Only then it could save the life and health in an accident.
Fasten, or be fastened.

(2nd one)

Remember how we loved each other?
... how we met each other?
... how we were always hurrying to live and were always on time?
You were lucky to die immediately.
Don't speed. Don't run the red lights.
Vain risk turns into broken life.

And a collection of social ads from different countries (includes "the mess" ad in the original post):

http://fishki.net/comment.php?id=38495

It's not only traffic-related ads, though. These ads are in English or with English subtitles.

Happy New Year, and be safe!
