Big problem
 

Hey i just encountered a big problem this morning. I tried to start my car but when i turned the key i got nothin. No sound or anything. No clicking no starting nothing. After i turned the key for the 5th time it started after holding the key in for about 2 seconds....i got nothing untill it finally started up. Nothing meaning no sound. Pretty weird as its never done this before and it is idling and warming up like normal in my driveway as we speak. What could have caused this?

My Outback is doing the same thing. I haven't had it looked at yet (working at a dealership you'd think I would have fixed it by now:rolleyes: ).


Anyway, two common causes of this:

1) bad ignition switch

2) worn starter contacts (you should hear at least a small "click" if it is this)


Mine acts up about once a week, but it always starts after a few tries. I get the same symptoms as you: no sound, no nothing. And then, 5 or 6 tries later....starts right up like nothing is wrong. One of these days I'll look into it and find out exactly what it is.

I have the same thing with my car. SVX already had this problem, when i bought it a year ago. I dont think you should worry about it. The car starts anyway:)

i have the same problem about two or three times per year. it hasn't left me stranded yet.

Another thing to check is the shifter position. See if it will start in neutral. Some people have had issues with the neutral safety switch being out of alignment with the selected gear.

Thanks for the input guys. The starting problem only happened this morning on cold start. I have been out with the car all day and with no problems starting so i think everything is ok. Just got me a little worried this morning. I didnt even hear a click...turned the key and nothing happened then i held the key in on the fifth try and bang he started right up...just thought that was pretty weird.
