Do it yourself... or not??? Axle

How hard is changing the driver's side front axle? Is it something i should let me boyfriend do himself or should i take it to the shop to get done. He has all the tools at home and has done my brakes and the little things my car has needed in the past.

changing the axle isn't terribly difficult. You either have to use Beav's trick of removing the three bolts connecting the lower A-arm or else will have to go out for a front end alignment when done. Plus I think it's a 32mm socket needed for the axle nut (not a common size - maybe 1-1/4" will work).

either way I think it would take me about an hour now that I've done it once, I think it took me about two hours on jack stands in the garage.

Do a search and print out directions, see if he can do it. Here's a greatly simplified version of what to do:

remove wheel,
remove axle nut,
remove 3 bolts on A-arm,
remove pin on transmission end of axle,
remove axle,
reverse,
live happily ever after.

I'll be doing the same axle on mine very soon, Jen. Have it on order and pick up the reman axle tomorrow. Now I just need to find someone to assist with the heavy work who has off the same days I do. I'll let you know how it goes for me if I do mine before you do yours.

Here you go!

http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/10544.jpe

Always check the HowTo section first. There are better threads I found before when searching that give a little more detail than the generic ones in the link above.

Here is another one I was thinking of:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...le+replacement

Just do a quick search in the tech forum on "axle replacement" Tons of good info. ;)

I think the front axles are fun to change. :D

You can use the 3 bolt Beav method but I've always used the one bolt method like the jpg in the how-to states.
