Speed Sensor 2?

So, it was pretty cold out today (-3), and I didn't let my car warm up properly. On my way to work, I got a check engine light and the speedometer/odometer stopped working.

I checked the code, and it appears to be a Speed Sensor 2 (three long blinks followed by three short blinks). Does this sound right to those of you in the know? Also, how do I fix this? I would really like to avoid a mechanic.

I saw this in the How-To section, but honestly don't know where to go from here:

So, what do I do? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Speed Sensor 2?

you can unscrew the speed sensor from the front diff and then with your car on you can spin the speed sensor by hand or with a drill and it will move your speedometer. if it moves your speedo then your speedo driven gear is likely bad. if your speedometer doesnt move when you spin the sensor then the sensor is likely bad and you need to get a new one. ive got the same problem right now too and mine is my speedo driven gear which sucks.

The check engine light comes on after the sensor fails and the speedo stops, at least in my experience. I've searched it on our net, never found anyone that actually lost the gear, always seems to be the sensor.
[Agree with response on how to diagnose problem, well said :)]

It's easy enough to replace yourself. Taking a look at your mods, I'd say 'no problem' for you to swap it. :D

Only problem may be the price of that little goody!! Seems to me I paid about $150 for a new one when my speedo and cruise went South.

Thanks for the help, all! I'll crawl under there as soon as it stops snowing.

No crawling, it's near the differential dip-stick :)

Thanks! I'll have to change a belt this weekend anyway, so I'll check it out then. Any better photos of where it is? Also, what can I expect to pay for one? Auto Zone wants $250
