I'm moving this from my progress thread into an actual technical thread. Sorry for creating so many, but I think this is where this problem belongs.

I got the motor put back in and fired up. She turns on and runs pretty well :)

BUT I am having a few problems.

To start, there is NO CEL or stored ECU code when I try and pull them.

When I first turned things on I got the 16 power light blinks. After some cursing I finally convinced the car to show me the code, and assuming I counted correctly it was a Trans code 22 which is listed as "Atmospheric Sensor." I have no clue wtf that is and I can't find it listed anywhere.

Also, the car seems to be in limp mode. I can't get it over 3k or it initiates a fuel cut (at least I think this is what's happening). I can hear a relay tripping from the area of the ECU each time.

I'm wondering if this could have anything to do with my delete of the EGR system.
(I think I did this correctly) I plugged the exhaust port, plugged the port on the intake manifold, and jumped the two vacuum lines on top of each of the butterfly valves to each other. Then left all of the others alone.

Someone mentioned to me that it could be related to a crank or cam angle sensor. I just recently replaced the cam angle sensor, but there are still the two sensors above the crank sprocket.

For some reason my gut says this is related to the transmission error and not the motor so much, but I have no basis for that.

After I pulled the trans code the car quit giving me the 16 power light blinks, but was still acting funny. I pulled the battery and did the procedure to reset things, and then the blinking power light came back.

Also, basically every other time I try and start the car it doesn't want to start. It just cranks but doesn't catch. Much like when I don't have the ignitors plugged in. I pull the key out, put it back in and it fires up just fine:confused:

When we were putting the engine back in we jacked the transmission up about as high as it would go. Could this have damaged anything?

I think that's all of the information that I have right now. As usual, help is always appreciated.

It does sound like crank/cam sensors. Can you locate some spares for testing?

I nabbed the two sensors above the crank sprocket from a junk yard car, but I have no clue if they work or not.

The cam sensor was just replaced recently so I doubt it'd be that. And that threw a code.


Any ideas about this mysterious trans code? I want to address the confirmed problem first before taking shots in the dark.

Less than 3k rpms is definitely "limp home" mode. Try resetting the ECU first (using the 2 blue leads in the driver's side kick panel). Next thing would be to swap out the MAF for one you know is good. Third would be checking the IACV and TPS to make sure they didn't get "dinged" during the overall process.

I have already tried resetting the ECU by both using the 2 blue leads in the first 2 pins to clear codes, and by pulling the neg battery cable, turning on lights, hitting brake.

The MAF was perfectly fine before I pulled the motor and it was just sitting on the counter since then. I do have another one that I will try swapping in to check.

What is the IACV?


Also, again, what about this Trans code? It's a known error right now, and can't be just looked over.

Okay, I watched your video and I "think" part of the problem may be that you're not supposed to actually start the car when you're checking for codes (yes, I counted the same 16 flashes as you did!).

Directions for checking the Codes
1) Remove the kick panel just beside the left foot rest on the driver's side.
2) Locate blue wires.
3) Locate black connector. Hold it notch up.
4) With ignition off, insert one of the wires into top row, 2nd pin from left.
5) Turn key to on position, but do not start the car.
6) Watch blinky check engine light on dashboard. Count blinks. Long blinks = 10, Short blinks = 1.
7) Keep watching blinky light until you get mesmorized.

To clear codes (after problem has been resolved):
1) With engine off, stick the blue wires to 1st and 2nd pin in the top row counting from left on the
black connector, with notch facing up.
2) Start car. Shut off car. Remove pins.
3) Read codes to make sure they are clear. No codes = steady blinks at 1/4 second intervals.

LOL, The video was just to show the limp mode. I know how to pull codes. There are no ECU codes, and the trans code pulled was 22 after the whole PITA shift lever, press manual nonsense. The 16 Power blinks are just to say that there is a stored code.

Well after some more fighting to get the code out of the car, I have double checked that the trans code is in fact 22 "atmospheric sensor." (as listed by the SVX-IW)

Code 22 doesn't show up on my AllData subscription so that's kind of strange.

I have three good MAF's right now, and I cleaned/tried all 3 and the result was the same.

I tried unplugging the Cam angle sensor and the car would only start for a second then stall. Unplugging either of the crank angle sensors resulted in a complete failure to turn over. Both also were accompanied by the correct CEL.

How does one go about checking the IACV?

I'll be testing the TPS sometime in the next couple of days, when some free time shows up.

Sorry, I just thought from your posts that you were inferring a trans code from a blinking ECU code :lol:

Okay, let's go back to fundamentals....

1. You're in "limp" mode, per the "I won't go over 3k rpms" situation,

2. 16 flashes of the Power light = transmission error code, go check for TCU codes

3. Limp mode only happens when the car thinks something serious has gone wrong, in this case it must think the trans is fubared (?)

Given that it wasn't doing this before you pulled the engine, I keep finding myself coming back to the electrical harness and the connectors that were disconnected/connected in the process - especially the ones that go back to the trans.

Did you know that there is an EGR solenoid valve under the intake (part # 14774AA271)? It does send a signal back to the ECU...

Since we run a MAF and not a MAP, I'm not sure if the NASIOC thread applies here...Can one of our resident ECU experts chime in here and confirm whether or not our ECU has a barometric pressure gauge built into it?

So it does appear that this points to the barometric pressure sensor.

So I've consulted the SVX bible (service manuals) and found the following:

Transmission Error 22: "Detects a faulty atmospheric sensor built in to ECU (MPFI)"

I'm assuming by ECU they mean TCU.

There is no troubleshooting guide for TCU code in the service manual.

I would replug the 4 main harness plugs to the engine as well as the 2 for the transmission. Also replug all the connections to the TCU itself.

The ECU has an atmospheric sensor as well (code 45). The service manual solution for this code: "When trouble code 45 appears on display, replace ECU."

After digging through a whole bunch of diagrams I think I have figured out how the barometric pressure sensor in the ECU relates to the TCU.

According to the diagrams it sens a signal directly out and into the TCU. As far as I can tell, it doesn't really go anywhere besides right out of the ECU and back into the TCU. On the diagrams I've found it shows no other connectors located in between.

I picked up an ECU and TCU today from the junk yard. I figure I'll try the easy fix first, after I first re-check all of my connections.

Odds are... This is going to end up being something that didn't make it back in place on reassembly.:(

We all can do things to cars that they can't do to themselves.

Ah hah, more new information...

I think something is up with the vehicle speed sensor. It's the first I've seen of it, but when I just started her up the speedo was bouncing around a bit. It would be fine for a while, then bounce up, then be fine, it is intermittent with no pattern.


So far tonight I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting everything on the engine harness and cleaning it. Also I have tried replacing the two relays just in front of the ECU, as well as trying another TCU and ECU. Problems still remain.

Also, intermittently I have gotten a CEL for the cam angle sensor. Sometimes I crank it four or five times and nothing, other times first crank and she fires right up.

This ECU code wasn't here when the problems started.
