koni inserts

ive read a little bit about them, but i need some more input. i can get some used stock struts with around 100k miles, with a 30 day warranty for around $400. i need stuts BAD!!! my tires bounce like a basketball on some of the dirt roads around here, even going slow and the sound is bad. what do koni's go for? where can i get them and will they be worth it? and does anyone have any they are selling? how hard are they to install also? thanks for any help

Re: koni inserts

I think the inserts are about 750 after shipping for all 4. I recommend them over the stock struts because I've purchased new struts from the dealer and had them fail within less than a year, and ended up with koni's anyway.

Re: koni inserts

thanks tim!

did you put them in yourself? if so how hard was it and what is involved? if you didnt, how much did you pay? just for an estimate on price

Re: koni inserts

No, I had YT put them in. The installation of the inserts isnt hard, but the issue I had at hand was the cuttting and welding for the ground control coilovers. The stock spring perches had to be cut off and replaced by the GC spring perches (which required welding).

I think I paid around 730 for the struts and around 400 for the Ground Control coilover kit.

Re: koni inserts

is it possible to use the stock springs? if so, does that require any welding and modifications? i dont really want to lower the car like the gc's do, im fine with the ride height, so can i just keep it?

Re: koni inserts

Since you're cutting the stock housing, it still uses the same spring perches, so yes, stock springs can be used.

These are instructions for installation on an impreza, but it follows the same concept. You can then decide if you want to tackle the project yourself or have someone build them for you.

Re: koni inserts

I would recommend the Koni inserts. Your major expense will be the labour so why not get the good stuff.

Mychailo may have some inserts left. He used to stock them. Click the link to the on line store in his signature.

I got mine from classicgarage a while back ago.

Re: koni inserts

I believe classic garage is the only distributor in North America. These inserts are a special rum from Koni and not an off the shelf item. Classic responded to the small market for them and brought in the min. order required to have them made.
That said I bought mine from Mychailo cheaper than classic sold them. Most likely they didn't want to compete with their dealer.

Have you tried Motor Sport Warehouse? Dayle is a good guy & has fair prices.

I'm pretty sure he carries the Konis.

Re: koni inserts

awesome everyone thanks. so what are the prices on each one, if anyone knows? motorsport, compared to classic garage, compared to Mychailo? if classic will give free shipping, i think thats a big plus, i would think shipping would be a pretty penny.

Re: koni inserts

ok, so i just took my car into the tire shop to have them balanced again, rotated and aligned. well, i was just in there back in december and they did not say anything about my struts. it turns out they wont even align my car because my strut mounts are shot. i knew my struts needed replacing, but i didnt know anything beyond that. i guess my whole strut falls out when its jacked up (that has NEVER happened to me when i use a floor jack, but whatever) anyway, for a short term solution can i just replace the strut mounts or is that even possible? i should be getting a hefty return from my college in a few weeks, but in case its not enough to cover for koni's ill need a short term solution. also, they priced the job at 2k for all 4 struts. my rear ones arent as bad as the front, they are only leaking. anyone have any input for me? im just so confused as to what i should do.
