transimission fluid?
 

i got my tranny rebuilt but i dont know what oil i should use for the tranny/torqe converter and the diff and i want the best lubes for my investment....any help woud be awsome

also, im not sure what size, brand, and placement of an auxilarry tranny cooler?

Genuine subaru atf or redline d4. Amsoil and royal purple have been failing their shear & shock tests, mcpherson, etc lately.

Any decent 80-90 is fine or 75-90. I prefer a good synthetic on the diff.

I have used nothing but Amsoil and Mobil 1 synthetic ATF and gear oil and have never had an issue in 15 years since I have been using them. All my subarus have run and shifted flawlessly. Nuff said:cool:

Mobil 1 is 100% independently verified that it meets all of the claims for flash and fire points, is readily available, moderately priced and is 100% compatable with whatever you have in there now.

I don't trust what a bottle says unless it mirrors independent lab results. When I rebuilt in 2000 I couldn't find any independent verification of the claims of Royal Purple, Amsoil or B&M so I went with the highest flash and fire points for ATF.

As for dif fluid, I use castrol or mobil syth. gear oil.

Yep mobil 1 is good and with confident supporting data. I dig their oil.

thnx for the info...i went out and bought subaru stuff....a lil pricey but w/e

i'll pick up sum mobile one tomorro

so what about the tranny cooler? any advice there?

I really don't think you can go wrong with Subaru fluid either. Mobil 1 Synth is about $5-7 a quart.

Do a search for the tranny cooler. There is a ton of info. Personally I think they're a waste of time without a tranny temp gauge but that's just anal me. I like to know when I'm cooking my fluids so I can change 'em before it becomes too late.:lol:

Agreed. You need a temp gauge in a good location to see at least what is coming out of the tranny.

Since I am in a rapidly fluctuating climate I am facing the diffuculty on how to produce a working thermostatically controlled cooler.

Currently I am wondering about how a 160 thermostat would ever close with the cooler being in the radiator and the conduction constantly heating up the trans fluid....????
I think it might be open all the damn time.

Conversely, one that is set to be full open at 180 degrees will crack and allow 10% at 160-165 which might be the best option.

Also, I am going to plumb to rail coolers next to each other, one the std tube and fin and the other the finned full aluminum model. The tube and fin will sit above the belly pan so it will have some protection from the rocks etc while the back one has a little more beef and act as a better heat sink.
