Oil Filter question!

OK, my local Scooby Stealership (no typo  ) wants to charge me $10.19 before tax for a damn OEM oil filter. I'm doing a bunch of stuff to my SVX this weekend at Harry's place (newsvx) and I need a filter asap, but I'm not going to pay that much for one (when the regular price according to subaruparts.com is $6.98).

What other filters are acceptable for our cars? Mobil 1, Fram, Fram Tough Guard, Penzoil?

Thanks! :D

There was a great thread about which filters were better than others. Do a search for oil filter and see if you can find it. I try to use OEM filters, but if I don't, I use others and use the lookup book or mini computer in the store. :)

Thanks Earl! I'll do a search... :)

$10.19 w/o tax is just ridiculous!

what Earl said. why not just order a bunch from: http://www.langstonsubaru.com/en_US/

(they are $4.61 each. ;) )

I would've, but I didn't get paid until today and I'll have no gurantee when they'll get here since it'll be shipped UPS Ground. I definitely need it by Friday evening, as I head out Sat at 7:00am for Harry's place. Next time I'll do that! Adrien and Brian are the best! :D

When I did the search...

members were recommending different brands, but it seemed like a FRam filter with Mobil 1 would be just fine for our cars. I'll do that this time, and go with an OEM filter w/ Mobil 1 next time...

Oh, and 10W-30 oil! :)

No, definitely NOT Fram!

Check out the forum on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ for reasons not to use Fram!

Can't find any info on the site badmouthing FRAM. Got a link to a specific thread/article?

MICRONS AWAY!

I've been told that there is a special install second filter (called Oil Guard) that's supposed to be great (DOWN TO 1 micron!). Or we can use a PREMIUM (like K&N) to get similar results. I was told that regular (OEM and aftermarket) filters only filter down to about 35 microns! Do you guys know anything about these allegations?

THANKS! :D

P.S. I like $5 filters better than $10 filters, too! But, if the results of a SUPERIOR $10 filter are substantial, then it might be better to pop for that more expensive (K&N, not OEM) SUPERIOR filter!?

A search for 'Fram' under the "Oil Filters" section of the above forum shows there are pages and pages of negative comments about Fram filters. There are much better filters out there.

Thanks Matt. Read the site in it's entirety, and Purolator Pure One got a great review and is only $5.88 at Advance Auto Parts ($0.10 cheaper than Fram Tough Guard which also made the passing list 'barely')!

Say goodbye to Fram! Funny thing is, the dealer I bought the car from changed the oil and there is a regular ol' Fram filter on there right now! Luckily, I've only driven my SVX about 800 miles since I bought it - and that crap is coming off this weekend! :)

P.S. Why do dealers have to mark-up crap like this? If my local stealership sold the filter at Subaru's suggested price of $6.98, I would've picked one up today w/ no complaints!

WOW! $10 is an absolute ripoff! Dealers like that give us a bad name:(!

I'll sell you SVX filters for $5 each, including the drain plug gasket AND shipping. How's that sound?

I highly recommend using the factory SVX Oil filter unless it's an absolute emergancy. Being cheap over $4 isnt an emergancy in my book! ;) :p
