Intake air boot cracked open due to age, obsolete?

I see that Subaruparts no longer carries this product due to it being obsolete. What are you guys doing for a replacement of this part? JB weld is not holding after all these years of PCV going into it, along with vibrations.

14457AA061 AIR INTAKE BOOT $159.59 $159.59

You should have no trouble finding that part used on the forum here. PM Nate, or post a thread in the parts wanted forum.

That number was replaced in 1992 with the following. It shows available from Subaruparts:

14457AA062 - Air Intake Boot - $162.51

Why on earth would I want an used unit that will end up having the same symptoms as my unit?:D

some bummer news from Subaruparts.com

I've been in touch with Allison at Subaruparts.com and below is our email conversation. Bottom line is that Subaru tells her that part is not interchangeable  Read from bottom to top.

I'm having a hard time believing that all the intake air boots should be interchangeable with all model SVX cars!!

----------------------------------------------------------------
Most items on SVX’s are the same; some items are different though and this particular item says that it is different. Unfortunately they list no interchangeable numbers for either item.

Ok, thanks for the confirmation. Now, I don't really know what to do with a cracked intake. I know that cars this vintage all should have the same cracked intake issue. Are there any other substitutions? I think the part should be interchangeable between '92 to '97 if that helps.

thanks for any help.

Best Regards,
Ali

Its hard to say if it would work or not, I did call Subaru and they said that it would not work due to a manufacturing date difference.

Hey Allison,

Did 14457AA062 replace p/n 14457AA061? If so, time to update subaruparts.com website!

I can compare the 97 and 92 engines when I get home later to double check if you want. It should be exactly the same though.

They are all the same for all years. No difference at all.

Not to change the subject but are you sure it's cracked? I could be wrong but with mine it appears to be cracked but isn't. Below the throttle body on the intake there is a tube that is molded into the intake. I'm not positive but I don't think the tube actually enters the intake chamber. If this is the location let us know. If it is somewhere else or is causing running issues then by all means get a new one.

I should've been more specific and perhaps the use of "cracked" is misleading. You know where the nipples are (for PCV, etc) near the bottom of the "box"? Well, in my case, everywhere the nipples are located, the box has split. As a result, some unmetered air is going into the intake. Engine runs fine but probably not optimally. I can open up the crack by moving the nipples around (that sounds a little strange :p).

Yeah, thanks for doing that and I'm sure they will interchange.

As far as I can tell without taking them off, they are the same.

My 94 had some cracks like that that were fixed with RTV when I got it. Must be a somewhat common problem.

+1 on the RTV silicone fix- that's what I did with mine. JB Weld isn't very flexible.

I worked for Subaru for a number of years, and 14457AA061 > 14457AA062 is absolutely a part supercession. It was probably done so long ago there is no note of it in the EPC, but the paper manuals will definitely have it.

Right on, I'll try it. Will do my best to clean the oil out of the area before slapping on some RTV. Thanks.

Excellent info, thanks for letting us know. This will benefit others greatly I'm sure.
