Giugiaro strikes again

Giorgetto Giugiaro's design of the new Alfa Romeo Brera has just made it voted the most beautiful current production car at the Automobile Festival in Paris. As you all know he sketched the SVX as an AR concept in the early 90's, and when they weren't interested sold it to Subaru. Look at the detailing around the A pillar and above the screen and those hints are still there!

Are we beyond, or are we beyond?

Do you have a link? :)

Looks like the SVX front end on roids, and a crossfire rear end queen latifa style (big ass)
pretty cool, how do we get the angry as hell look?

Big Booty

No links - it was an article in Uk AutoExpress mag ( I think), and the background info is mine. I suspect the Brera's big booty is something to do with getting at least one set of golf clubs in the boot/trunk.

Check out this "Machine Warriors" video featuring the Brera. It might change your opinion of the new Subaru front end.

Front End Backside

The new psuedo Saab front end is a complete abortion, as were the Stevens large headlights on earlier WRxs etc - they cant go on fooling buyers with a badly Botoxed bonnet. Just goes to show what an exceptional line the SVX had and a very low 0.28 drag factor, as well!

The link animation is really silly.

I do would like to find one of the blue DESIGN GIUGIARO emblems.

Dan, Looks like you may be able to buy them from Alfa Romeo if the Brera makes it to the states.

In short.......

I'm convinced this current "Brera" they have brought to market is fundamentally different from the original Brera design study by Giugiaro. The original seems to me to be longer, sleeker, more projectile like. The current one is stumpy, butch, broad muscular stance.

I think I have pics of the original somewhere on file, it will be interesting to compare.

Having said all that, I genuinely like the current car, I hope it does well. They have faithfully retained the hyper aggressive nose of the original Brera.

Michael, I am in total agreement about the WRX lights on previous models. Subaru seem to have a need to make successive models more and more ugly. The whole nose design of the current WRX is a laugh. Stand one beside a Mitsubishi EVO, and ask a child which is more handsome! Style wise, the Impreza has lost its way, and they are now losing sales on account of it. Just because a car has WRC credentials does not mean the average buyer is going to be happy driving an ugly pig of a thing.

I'm saving up for a Maserati Quattroporte. I have had enough of these dumpy frumpy rally derived rubbish.

Joe:)

I don't know... I rather like the 'aerospace-inspired' Impreza front grille. It certainly looks better there than it does on the hideous B9 Tribeca. Word on the inside is that the grille will be gone in '07.

Suba-rue the day

Mr G did a reasonable job on the portly Brera, BUT as it is also clear that the name of Subaru no longer holds us all in the thrall that it did with all those World Rally Championships etc, and it's strange absorption into the Volvo world of platform exchange, let us praise the rally car, let us commend the Legacy B spec estate bodied stonker - it may look blandish, but it is very very underrated, and preserve our love, respect and absolute commitment to the one, the only object of all these inane threads - the SUBARU SVX - in it's guises as 4w steer, 4w drive, 2w drive, it only ever had one (unmodified except for the wing) bodystyle, one wheel size and one engine capacity. In like a hero - out like a hero.

Hi Joe, I am saving for Aston Martin DB9:-), maybe will buy BMW 850CSI for a fun but Aston Martin is my dream. Having enough money they will have someting like DB20:-))).
But there is no care like Jaguar XJ220... real aristocrat but no way to buy it

svxistentialist 06-05-2006 04:30 PM

We are hijacking Michael's thread here, I hope you don't mind, Michael.

Not too many of the current crop of production cars are "beautiful", although I am of the opinion that a large number of the current crop are well proportioned and handsome.

And I agree with Petr, for sure Aston Martin do not miss the mark with some serious eye candy at the moment. The AM I like best is the V8 one. Short overhangs, and very purposeful stance.

And if you wanted the most possible performance for your pound, and could not bring yourself to buy a Bentley or live with the breakdown worry that is TVR ownership, then the best show in town is a Lamborghini Gallardo. Looks good, goes good, you feel good, what more can you ask?

Joe:)
