Compatible transmission?

Here's a description of a used tranny I'm giving thought to as a replacement to my tired one. Am I looking at something here that would be fairly easy to drop in along with rear diff. gear swap of course. Whatcha think, worth doing? Here's the donor car description: 2001 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. It is AWD, has only 29K on it. Also includes torque converter and available rear diff.

No - don't think so. As I understand it, anything past 1998 as a donor car is a no-no. Your tranny needs to come from a pre-98 or the TCU can't communicate with the ECU.

Not saying that it can't be done, but it would require rewiring to get it to deal with the ECU, and nobody has shown yet that they are even compatible?

Come up with FSM's for both and you'll be able to see how much of an issue it's going to be. It should bolt up though, but not all of the mounting points will get used.

The easy way to identify an "easy swap" is to look for an external brake band adjustment and the lack of an external spin on filter.

Go ahead and do it, document it, and be another SVX pioneer :D

I was going to try it at some point. I found it way too hard to do... Maybe one day I will try it again as the newer 4eat's are MUCH better. But for now, I would stick to a sub'98 tranny

Late Automatic

What are the difficulties of using a late auto trans besides interfacing the wiring and mounts . Can the svx final drive gears be used to match the svx rear end. i want to keep the high ratio. Is it a more robust trans? It is used in 3.0 sixes! Is the all wheel bias the same and you could use the late TCU. Steve
