Well, momma (finally) gets/orders a new car tomorrow. The list has been whittled down to three. Which one would you choose?

Subaru Outback VDC (212hp H-6, 4-sp auto) - Black/Black

Volvo V40 (160hp L4 1.9t, 5-sp auto)- Black/Black

Volkswagon Jetta GLX (VD6) (200hp, 5-sp auto tiptronic) - Black/Black

(And daddy gets the SVX :D :D )

Get the Outback... then you can breed 'em. :confused:

If you are looking at the VW family, look at the Passat. It's:
-larger with more interior room (especially in the back seat)
-available with AWD
-built on the same platform as the A4 and A6 from Audi
-front end design eliminates torques steer (I know I have a turbocharged 5 speed Passat)
-not much more expensive than the Jetta
-built in Germany
-very :cool: (sorry Steve, kinda partial to them!)

For the Outback, are you getting a wagon or the new sedan? The new sedans are SWEET looking... There's one driving around here that's almost a pearl color with a gray bottom.. Really sharp looking cars!!

I'd vote for the Outback. My dad has a Timberline Green 2002 Outback VDC wagon and it is *the nicest* car I have ever ridden in or driven. It's not a sports car, obviously, but the H6-3.0 provides plenty of power and it moves great. The leather seats, dual moonroofs, and the McIntosh sound system are all great and truly worthy of luxury-car status.

When shopping for the car, we considered practically every wagon and SUV that could be compared, from Jettas and Passats to the Audi Quattro, Acura MDX, Lexus RX300, etc. The price, performance, features, and Subaru's reputation just made the Outback VDC stand out. When we went into the buying mode last year, the Outback wasn't really a major consideration (my dad already had an Outback that he was going to be relegating to me, he wanted something different). But there's no arguing with the best :)

The Subaru Legacy made the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's "Best Pick" for the mid-size class. And since the Outback is a slightly stronger Legacy, combined with the VDC it's one of the safest choices you could make.

We did consider the sedan over the wagon, but the increased cargo room and nifty dual moonroofs made the wagon the best choice.

It's my dad's fourth consecutive Subaru wagon since the 70s. I'm currently driving his 1996 Outback 2.5L. They're just plain great cars :)

Oh, and one other thing. Today driving the 02 in fresh heavy rain I got my first taste of the VDC. AWD by itself is good for traction, but the VDC just works wonderfully. No slipping or sliding whatsoever, and the car just keeps going the way you point it.

And the 2002 Outback VDC is just plain :cool:

I'd get the O'back, simply for the AWD. If that's the AWD Volvo, I would consider it. But I think the $$$$ differential would probably sway me toward the Outback, even so.

I'd go with the Outback, and not just for the loyalty angle although that does play a part. Numerous bad experiences with my buddies Jetta VR6 led him to a Dodge Ram. They praise the Passat in Consumer Reports, but they always seem to be having minor electrical problems. I'm amazed at the number of new VW's with one tail or brake light out. As for Volvo's, talk about a lousy repair record, and darned expensive! I think part of Sweden's GNP comes from US repair bills!!!! Go Subaru and you'll be fine. I drove the wagon and sedan VDC, and am thinking of getting the sedan as I have a Forester already. The guy at my dealer told me he heard they might put the 3.0 H-6 or Turbo WRX motor in the 04 or 05 Legacy GT, which I think is better looking then the Outback sedan.

We liked the VDC, but I just don't fit well behind the wheel. I haven't been able to figure out why. I'm not that tall.

If we had been able to tolerate the VW dealer in Evansville, Indiana, we would have gotten the Jetta. But their complete arrogance (they also sell MB's, Audi's, BMW's, Porsche's, etc.) and total disregard for what we had in mind (they knew way better than we did what we were looking for :rolleyes: ) and the fact that they would promise us a car without even knowing if they could get one (we searched the 'net thoroughly, and didn't find any dealerships with one - and they really didn't have any idea whether they would get one for quite awhile), lost the sale for them.

We weren't exactly pleased with the high-pressure we got from the Volvo dealer in E'town either.

The nearest VW dealer (other than the one in E'ville) was in Bloomington, IN, about 120 miles away. We called, and they didn't have a GLX Wagon, but we could drive a turbo, and a turbo-deisel (sounded like fun), and besides, the Volvo dealer nearby had a 2002 V40 (we had only seen the 2001 - a program car).

So away we went to Bloomington (home of the Little 500, Hilly Hundred, etc.), and drove the V40. It was Sharon's decision, really. But it was a good one. After all the raving she did over the Jetta, I couldn't believe it when we got back and she said, "This is our next car". We orderd a black one. (Black is beautiful. The one they had was silver, which is only quite lovely.) Now all we have to do is wait for it. :( Oh yeah, and pay for it. :eek:

We didn't make it to the VW dealer.

Guess how many V40's you're going to see in a small hick town in Southern Illinois (with two SVX's)? One, now. :cool:

Congratulations Steve, I'm sure YOU'LL hasten them along, since its arrival will mark your ability to drive the SVX.
