OMG smoking!!

i got home today and my car was smoking VERY badly
like pouring out of the engine bay
it's leaking oil like crazy from somewhere and dripping all over the exhaust makin it smoke alot.

tomarrow i'll jack up the car and have a look to see where it's leaking
i'm hoping it's just the crank seal failing and not something worse..

What color is the oil? That happened to me, and it was PS fluid. Check your hoses, both pressure and return. It sounds like someting that started all at once - like a hose or something. Good luck and I hope it is something simple. :)

NomadTW 06-09-2003 10:55 PM

i coudln't see it's pitch black outside
i'll check in the morning see if a hose came undone or something

it smelt like normal oil smoke
but i've never actually encoutnered any other burning oils

NomadTW 06-10-2003 09:01 AM

well it's daylight and i put the car up on wheel ramps, and i had a look see

there seem sto be a very thing hose dripping oil of some kind just hangin down
it's about 1/8" diam, and it has some sort of plastic thingy around it a little ways up, i can't find where the other end is
it's hanging down next tot he passenger side CV axle by the transmission

any thoughts
and any thoguhts how to fix this?

marlettpat 06-10-2003 09:12 AM

you should punish your car. smoking is bad

i'm a fan of positive reinforcement
i'll reward it when it corrects the problem

seems it was the dipstick for the center diff.... i think the center diff, center or front
i wonder how long it's been like that
and if it's been that way for a while i wonder why the car just now sprayed oil all over

Green1995SVX 06-10-2003 10:10 AM

It has to be for the front diff. the center diff is part of the transmission, and uses the same ATF as the rest of the tranny. :)

yeah i relize that now

but i still wonder how long it's been like that
wonder why it popped out like that it's odd

Are you sure about it using ATF? I changed the fluid in both diffs a couple of years ago, and I seem to remember that they both used gear fluid. Also, I would double check that the PS hoses aren't leaking.

Mike wasn't saying that the front or rear diffs used ATF. They both use the same smelly gear oil. He was referring to the transfer assembly as the 'center diff' and that uses ATF for operation and lubrication.

Mike

um........they use gear oil. 80W-90W (front) and 75W-90W (rear), depending on your temperature extremes, per the owners manual. i don't know what would happen if ATF is in there, but i don't want to find out!

treat it to some nice Mobil 1! :)

kuoh 06-10-2003 07:49 PM

Well if we want to get technical, there isn't a center diff. ;)
