Torque convert installation
 

Hello all,

I'm having issues putting the torque converter back in the transmission. I had a stripped bolt on the flex plate on had to pull the converter when I pulled the engine and now I can't seem to get the torque converter to seat back in the transmission. Any tips?

First, make sure the torque converter shaft is installed properly to the TC before even attempting to install into the transmission. There is a clip that somewhat helps keep it together

After that, make sure the input shaft coming from the transmission is fully seated into the transmission and hasn't popped out partially when the torque converter was removed.

Finally, now you can begin to put the torque converter in. You will need to slowly rotate with pressure until the torque converter fully seats. It may "kick in" 2-3 times before it actually reaches the proper seating.

Thanks for the fast reply, Nate.

The shaft is properly clipped.

The input shaft is sticking out 1 1/8". Is that fully seated?

And the torque converter feels like it is seated but the torque converter, more specifically the wings that you bolt the flex plate on to, is dragging at the bottom when I spin it.

Unless I'm just being stupid and the TQ drags on the power steering rack because the engine is out?

When fully seated, the TC should be sticking out just past the bellhousing. (maybe 1/4") I can't recall offhand how far out the input shaft should be. I just remember I recently had an issue with the input shaft requiring more force to fully seat which was then causing the TC to not seat fully.

This is very possible. The torque converter flanges stick out past the bottom of the bellhousing. Make sure you have a jack under the trans to lift up the transmission. You will need to do this for installing the engine as well. This may also be preventing you from getting the torque converter fully seated, unless you have it in far enough, but just have it hitting the steering rack as you say.

It looks like that was the problem. The TQ was seated all along. I just had to put the engine in :)
