Stupid Question: How Do I tell what year my car is!?

So you'd think this would be something that would be known about your own car, but I'm now having questions about what year my car is. It was sold to me as a '92, and that is how I have it registered and on the title/insurance/etc. However I discovered some old manuals that (i some how) didnt see originally, one manual says "1994 Owners manual", and i ALSO found a book labeled "1994 Warranty & Maintenance Booklet".

Are there any sure ways to tell what year the car is... Can it be tracked to the VIN?

The DMV computers are rarely wrong. If your registration says 92, it's a 92. The books you found are just from the wrong year.

92 SVX's have an "N" in their VIN (tenth digit).
93's have a "P"
94's have a "R"
95's have a 'S"
96's have a "T"
97's have a "V"

Also, the date of manufacture is stamped on the door sill data plate.

Correct. Do remember though, that most cars in a given model year, were manufactured the previous year.

e.g. My car is a '96 L model, but was maufactured in 11/95.

True. But that could confuse some people, as the build year and model year are not always the same.

Ok, I just did a basic carfax thing, and it came out as '92.

Yes the 10th digit of the VIN is "N".

It's a '92.

I'm glad, I didn't want a '94 for some reason. :)

True. :)

I guess I just didn't want to feel like I've been living a lie all these months!!! hehe.

The 94's are FWD too right? I like having the AWD.

I thought '92's were faster due to no regulator?

red95svx 11-28-2005 02:30 PM

I'm just being silly. The 92's did clock the fastest 0-60 times. 94's were available as FWD or AWD models.

The Code Key is located Here Also the information for the different years is located there too and by knowing what color, and options, you can also guess what year it is. :D

Another thing to add is they only made silvers here in 92.

bwb3 11-29-2005 12:24 PM

Really, no '93 liquid silver? I just bought LEOinFl '92 liquid silver. One owner (his mom), always garaged, with 74,000 original miles for $1,500. Am suprised no one else here jumped on that. Has a Lowes shopping cart dent in the front fender, needs a power steering return hose and a drivers side visor.
Earl made me do it ("Betcha can't buy just one").
