SVX Overdrive
 

Just checking with the Gang....

I agree that the SVX is geared very low, especially in overdrive.

On the straight highway, at 60mph I'm at 2000rpm.

Does that sound right to everyone?

yes this sounds correct

When the TC locks up that is.

Seems like my TC locks up fairly easily and readily.
I see 2000 @60 just about immediately as it shifts into 4th.

The beauty of the SVX tranny is that you can do 90 mph at only 3,000 rpm's......YEEHAW!

Holy crap! I would try that but I'd go deaf from my bearings at that speed... Soon soon dear road warrior you will get new bearings in you :)

NJ is too heavily patrolled to go 90 though :(

That is normal commuting speed at 6am on 78 east. :D

During city driving, I wish I could unlock the torque and drive in 4th, without the lock-up....

Does anyone knows how we could "prevent" the torque from locking?

Could it be switch controlled like on volvo's??

This could be an interesting option....

does anybody know why it takes mine FOREVER to lock up (30 minutes - 25 degrees out, aftermarket cooler)?

on cold mornings days, mine takes awhile to get 4th gear and lockup, but never 30 minutes.. of course, i don't have a cooler hooked up.. 30 minutes sounds like way too long to me..

Mine's the same. My clock reads Kms, being Japanese. At 3000 rpm in 4, my speedo reads 140, which is approx 88.

It's a recipe for getting speeding points. The whole thing is so effortless and relatively quiet, it's about the same sensation as 50 in a lesser car. I have to watch the clock carefully all the time.

In theory this could be done easily enough.

The TCU decides when to lock up using sensors such as speed and oil temp and what gear is engaged.

Lockup operation is controlled by a solenoid, and is therefore electrically operated under the control of the TCU. The computer uses a range of duty ratios for this solenoid. At 5%, it is "off" at 95%, it is fully locked "on".

For smooth operation, the TCU can command a start ratio of 25%, and shift gradually to 95% fully locked.

So if you disconnect this solenoid from the TCU, and insert a switch feeding it the voltages for 5% or "off" and the equivalent corresponding to 95% for "on", you can switch it in and out.

Did not know volvos can do that. Why? Is it more useful in snow??

Is it really that high?

My dad's camry and my sister's maxima does the same RPM at 60 mph. And it doesnt take a while to shift into 4th when its cold.

It takes about 30 minutes for my car to lock the TC. It depends on how fast heat is generated in the tranny. I try to keep the engine load light until it warms up. Mostly driving on level ground with a light foot does not heat up the tranny quickly. Proceeding up a steep hill will do it though.
