SVX as a Collectible Car
 

First post, so be gentle.
I have a '92 SVX with 61K miles, in very good condition. I have been going through the car and bringing each component to as close as original as possible (except for the extra trans cooler).

My question is; should I park my SVX, driving it only occasionally (not as my daily driver), continue to go through all of the pieces and parts, and wait 4-5 years banking on the value appreciating as the SVX becomes more of a collectible car to a wider audience.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and insight.

If yes, garage it. If not, drive it like the rest of us and risk damaging it.

My opinion is that the car is unlikely to ever be valuable to collectors. I don't keep mine because I expect it to be worth anything to anybody else. I keep it because it's worth something to me.

Even if it isn't an investment, having one in good condition many years from now could at least invite admiration from car nerds everywhere - especially because few will ever recognize it.

I think it's far more likely that other Japanese halo cars from the '90s will be the collectors items - the Supra, 300ZX and RX-7, maybe. Hell, the Supra already is.

I do think the SVX will, some day, be a collectible if for no other reason, there were so few imported / made. And I doubt half imported to the US are still on the road today. The latter years probably more so than the earlier years. But will it be as collectible as the Supra? Probably not, because it was / is not a "performance" car. And it still is a Subaru. Like it or not, Subaru just does not have the standing that a Porsche does - or some of the other makes.
But as with any car, drive it and enjoy the car. Can't see a total garage queen just sitting in the garage to increase in value, regardless of the make.

Like the others said, I keep mine because it's what I like. I don't daily drive it, it sits in the back garage at my house. Every Sunday or so, I take it out for a spin, enjoy the smooth ride, the quick acceleration, and the comfortable interior. I daily drive an Excursion, so that kind of helps me appriciate the power and speed of the SVX a bit more.

These cars drive so well, it would be a shame for you to let it sit in a garage. Go out and enjoy the car. You will be glad you did.

I agree. This is not a car you will make money off of in the future. Drive it and enjoy it. It will be worth much to you in the future, and you will appreciate it as time goes on. Good luck. :)

Hello!

SVX may not grow in value in the US (You Guys got 18000 of them), but in the Europe it is already becoming an collectors choice. Europe just got 2500 of them and most of them are probably gone. Supra, 300ZX on the other hand you can find here everywhere and they are not that special. The Country, where I live has 10 SVX-es and 5 of them owned by one man, so 6 person have here an SVX.

On Mobile.de (Europes most common cartrading) mostly 20-25 are on sale.

And here also no one knows what car it is, :cool:

I dont think the SVX will become uber collectable and sort after until its atleast over 30 or 40 years old
If its kept super mint it will be worth more to the right person.
My 1974 Subaru 1400 DL is still yet to really become colectable.
They almost all gone here. I cant seem to sell my 1 for cheap at 3800 NZ dollars. Its Very tidy original car thats been looked after.
Yet a Toyota Corolla of the of same time, even is same colour will sell for over 6000. Seen them go for over 10K too.
Even another cross over ive seen Ruff Mazda RX3 shells with doors but nothing else etc go for 1000 to 5000.
Old Subarus Just dont really seem to be collectable or sort after as much as they should be.
Hopefully another few years and that mite change.

Mainly i have mine coz I enjoy driving them and they something different to every thing else on the RD

As numbers decrease, SVXes will become more collectable and prices will rise.

The collectors who will buy them are the people who know what a great car it is. They know because they already have an SVX, or 16, in their collection. Trouble is, most of these people (I assume) don't have the big $$$ to spend. This will be the limit to the potential future value.

You are very welcome on the Network. Your question is sensible and smart, we don't jump on newbies round here much. :rolleyes:

I would tend to agree with the bulk of replies, you will gain much more personal value from driving the car than you will from hiding it away.

It's an unfortunate thing, but rarity alone does not make a collectible car. Some cars will never gain value, no matter what. This can apply even for micro volume specialist cars.

What tends to make a car gain in value is the perception of the collector/buyer market. If a car is to become special, it will need that hard to define cachet. This can come from racing success, it can be because of unusual or advanced engineering, it can be from bodywork designed by a famous design house, it can be because the car has an air of quality, or it has exceptional handling. It can be from any combination of these.

My own opinion is that the SVX scores quite highly on a number of levels, and it will eventually appreciate in value. This will not happen for many years, and so I would not consider conserving my SVX as an investment. The investment return would be way too slow, and in real terms you would have to consider the cost of storage for X years as a factor in this.

The sums don't add up, just yet. Enjoy your car, get value NOW.

All of this may seem kind of disappointing. And I know that I should feel upset knowing that my vehicle, my daily driver that I care about so much, is not going to get a higher value until I'm in my 40's maybe? But I'm not disappointed, I'm not upset.. I really love this car and some people can't understand why. But the truth is, I value my car higher than i do a Porsche! Some may say it's crazy but I don't think so.. If I won the lottery today, I would not buy a fancy, high priced car like a Ferrari.. I would mod my car the way I wanted and make her even more unique(and lighter, lol)..

Make fun of it all you want but it's exactly like the new Subaru commercials say..

So I say enjoy it now and even in the years to come! The look on peoples faces when you drive by is worth it alone..

I would say - if the process of going through all the pieces and parts on your SVX and making it 100% perfect is enjoyable and satisfying to you, then do it. However, as the majority of the responses say, I wouldn't do it solely as an financial investment project. The collector market is too fickle. Enjoy your car now for what it is.
