The Swiss have won the cup.
Not bad for a country with no ocean?
Harvey. ;)

America's Cup

Harvey, " tell it like it is ". The Swiss financed boat crewed by the top Kiwi sailors bought from the previous winning Team N.Z at a price, has not won the cup. It has had three wins, however five wins are required out of nine races to take the cup.

The Kiwis sailing for N.Z in a N.Z. designed, built and financed boat, still have a very good chance against their mercenery ex team members. The racing is very, very close with nothing between the two boats, in spite of the huge budget backing the Swiss entered boat.

Kiwis in Team N.Z. are now sailing the final against ex Team N.Z. menbers in a Swiss boat. All the rest, USA x 3, Italy x 2, Gt Britain, France and Sweden having fallen by the wayside. That must say somethig regarding the depth of our competitive yachting. Multi millions have been spent in the efforts to wrench it from us. Many times the budget of Team N.Z.

Harvey as you have one of your countrymen aboard in team N.Z. and you have no team in the competition and we are all down under, you should be backing us Kiwis. But make sure it is the Kiwi team in the BLACK BOAT. The fat lady has yet to sing. Wish us the luck needed in the fickle conditions prevailing at the moment. A single wind shift during each of the last two races has been the deciding factor and the tension is huge.

All involved agree that this is the best and most competitive America's Cup event ever and it is not over yet. Keeping the cup after winning it and now dafending it for the second time against world challengers is a big ask of a country of only four million people, particularly when sailing against our own talent. Our loyal young team are giving it their best shot and the whole country is behind them. Harvey if you put your head out of the widow 10 AM tomorrow our time, you will hear the cheers as the Black Boat leaves the harbour.

Those wanting details will find plenty on the web on several sites. The events are live on world TV and the coverage should start about 2330 GMT 24th. if you can find the relevent channel. Race start time 0015 GMT (13.15 our summer time). There could be a delay if the wind is again fickle. My sleep time now so hope I have got the calculations right.

So its the Rolex boat manned by NZ sailors ahead of the NZ boat manned by NZ sailors.

Has the NZ "black boat" won any races over the Swiss boat or is it 3 to 0 ?

Good Luck to the NZ black boat.

I guess the USA boat is not competitive.

Trevor 02-24-2003 05:52 PM

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your interest. Do you have a boat like most of us down here ?

Sadly it is 3-0 to the Swiss boat so far.

There were three boats from the US entered and the best - Oracle BMW Racing, lost only in the finals to the Swiss boat. They came forward in the results when a Kiwi skipper, Chris Dickson, took over. The top three boats therefore have had Kiwi skippers. You must give me license to blow trumpet a little.

Racing is now off until Thursday our time.

Trevor,

I never had much interest in boating and never owned one.

I know too many boat owners who define boats as "Holes in the water that you throw money into !!"
