i'm not sure. I'll take some more pics in an hour or so to show what I seen.

this is the right side which was untouched by the damage

It looks like the axle unthreaded/separated from the diff.

U R not still driving it R U ? I once blew a piston in my 1979 Subaru Wagon. I was in Canada and the distributor ( remember them ) blew a bearing , the shaft miss fired a cylinder and blew a hole in it, the joke from the people riding in the car behind me was "there are no bugs left in Ottawa" Well that little car got me all the way home 400 miles with its broken motor. Subarus are like rototillers of the automobile world.

No it's sitting in my garage till i fix it. the diff don't even hold oil.

If it were my car i would switch it to a 4:44 and have it over with ... JMHO of course.

It is a 4.44/

The circle is the side plate from the differential. That is what you see the threads for, not the axle.

I'm just stumped on how it got like this after running all day perfect. And yes IT IS A 4.44 for those who don't know.

Probably already had a tooth missing for awhile or some wear. I had a ring gear missing a tooth and it never made a sound. When I finally removed it because the high clutch was bad, there was a tooth stuck to the diff drain plug.

I've been rough on a front diff and had it be fine. Yet other times, as far as what I've heard from people, they've had diffs grenade under basically normal circumstances. All it takes is one shockload of different sorts to blow up a differential. It really shouldn't but it happens.

Im just hoping swaping the front diff is all i need to do and nothing else or i don't know what i'll do. Figures i barley drive it now and when I want to take it out for the day AND fill the tank it does this. When I get the money to get it swapped out im going to take pics of the internals of it for "educational" purposes.

The one's I've done, the transmissions have all been fine. Even in a case of the diff case being shattered like yours. It is recommended to do a full replacement of the trans as the total cost is just slightly higher as expained. However I have done around 10 differential replacements and sent differentials to other owners and they've been able to get it changed and have not had an issue. Just be sure that both the ring and pinion get changed with a matched set.

Re: Front diff cracked

I don't want to replace the tranny cause it has low miles on it anyway and runs really well, hence why I just want to do the diff.

cut away some of the diff case but didn't really see anything. I do have a question but it could be dumb. When you turn the wheel is the gears/case aronud the gears suppose to move at all?

If you mean rotate the wheel/tire/axle does the ring and pinion rotate as well.
Not necessarily, there are four conical gears inside the front differential that allow side to side movement to accomodate different wheel distances and speeds.

So, if you rotate the left wheel in a forward direction the right wheel should rotate in the opposite direction.
