top speed
what is the top speed that a stock svx can reach that is not governed. and the 93s on up were governed at 160mph right? why i am asking is because on one of the local car forums that i am on there was a thread about top speed so help me out please.

I have had my SVX up to 145. It is pretty well stock. I know of one person who said that he achieved 171 on a stock SVX.
Mind you that there are many factors that will result in higher speeds. A few of the big factors in the SVX's top speed are Air Density, Temp, and Barometric Pressure. Altitude plays a big role as well. I have found with my SVX that a temp. of around 50 degrees is great and barometric pressure around 29.50 is ideal. Not all SVX's respond the same to these conditions. When the SVX was tested, all the stats were based on Sea Level(or close to sea level) altitude, which helps a lot. The EG33 is a great engine, but the final drive in the transmission will retard most top speed performance. A good final drive would be a 4.11 or a 4.44 final drive. Higer top end. The auto doesn't help it much either. Keith |

Actually those gears are good for bottom end, not top end. The 4.11 and 4.44 would launch your car off the line faster, but your top speed would suffer. The stock gearing allows you to do 90MPH at 3,000 RPM's whereas the 4.11 and 4.44 would only put you in the 70-80 MPH range......less MPH per RPM. With an RPM limiter, you need the most MPH you can get per RPM. From what I understand, an SVX with no limiters "should" go 195 MPH at redline. I've had mine up to 135 with no problems. Felt very solid. Dave |

Actually the speed at 3,000rpm is closer to 65mph for the 4.44 and 70 for the 4.11's... The 195 estimate was very close, I think it is actually 196... Either way, that is really fast and a stock SVX will never reach that. There just isn't enough power in the engine to move it that fast. Now add Longassname's stage 2 or stage 3 kit and you may just beable to pull it off.... Maybe... ... The aerodynamics are excellent but still at that speed it takes more power to accelerate the weight of the car against the force of drag on the body than the engine has. With the 5 speed in I got mine up to 155. Pretty scary. But I remember right before I slowed down, it was still pulling hard at about 6,000rpms... I don't think that Top Speed is a big thing... It definitly isn't safe, and I probably will never go that fast again on a public road. Just endangered my life and the lifes of others when I did that. The thing that is fun to me is corners and transitions and mountian roads :):)....... Too bad that is what claimed my car :( |
I think Car and Driver clocked a (ungoverned) 92 at 156mph top speed, and the later models were governed to 135mph...this is from my failing memory....

Sonar owns a relatively 'stock' awd '92 euro SVX (i.e. 3.70 gears) that he's competed with in a couple timed top speed events sanctioned by the Police Dept in Sweden.
Sonar has hit speeds of 167mph at the end of a timed 5 kilometer section of road, and he's mentioned that his speed was still climbing... It's hard to say what the true top speed of the SVX is as the 0.29 Cd will allow us to climb to dizzying speeds. As far as I know, late model SVX's were limited to 136mph, but the limiter can be removed with Longass's tuned Stage 1 ECU. -Chike |
'94s-'97s are electronically limited to 143mph, which was Subaru's 'estimated' top speed for the SVX anyway.
As far as I know, the only recorded top speed run with an SVX was Sonar's (in Sweden). He ran 164.4mph, if I remember correctly. Nobody else who has claimed a faster top speed has provided any kind of measurement beyond their speedometer and ability to read it. My SVX's speedometer, checked by GPS, has proven to be very accurate, but I think that's just luck. Other cars have not proven to be as accurate. Above 110mph, the discrepancy in mine gets noticable. Anyway, that's the straight dope, as far as I'm concerned. Sonar's is the only top-speed run measured by something other than his speedometer. And it's the only claim I trust. |

The slightly lower gearing in Sonar's Euro model, should help put the HP to the ground in the upper speeds, so a like equiped US version (3.54's) probably wouldn't achive the same speed, if all other variables where the same....

True, but on the second page of the same thread, Sonar talked about the previous year's timed run where he reached 267km/h (or 166.875 mph). I guess I just remembered the higher number...

The euro models also have a slightly lower Cd of 0.285 due to the slightly longer under-tray.
Mathematically, 3.700 gears will increase torque to the wheels by ~4% over the 3.545 gears in US models. At speeds of 150mph+, that small difference in gearing coupled with the lower Cd, could translate to the euro models being 4-5mph faster than the US model SVX's... -Chike Quote:

I have a friend who is a cop and dragraces he timed my car at 153 mph before I GOT SCARED the speedo was pegged.I assumed my car was governed being a 94.Would being fwd make much difference also you said the euro models have a 3.70 gear well thats what the fwd svx have also.
