differential swap

Is it possible to swap a awd front 4.44 differential onto a fwd 3.70 geared tranny, tranny to get a deeper gear for my fwd svx.

TomsSVX 08-30-2006 09:43 AM

Yeah, as long as your front diff is out of a stage I 4eat

this means 91-97.5 i think...

Ok,so I think tht what you are saying is that I can buy a used differential with say that 4.11 or 4.44 gear and just bolt that baby on I hope.My axles should work fine I hope.

you speak of the front diff right?? If so yes it will work not problem. Just make sure it is shimmed properly and that the las is set

Yes my car is fwd also hate to sound stupid but what do you mean by shimmed.I wnt all the info possible so I WILL HAVE NO ISSUES.

Well here is how the front diff works...

It has a HUGE pinion gear which runs from the rear of the transmission... up the pass side... to the front diff case. There is a seal in the oil pump (~1" spacer between the trans and differential) to keep the gear oil out of the ATF and the ATF out of the gear oil. The pinion has a big 4 bolt flange bearing outer race which is bolted to the front of the oil pump. On this flange the factory lays "shims" which push the whole pinion shaft closer to or pull further from the carrier. Use the shims specific to the pinion shaft NOT the transmission. This means use the shims that come with the pinion of the new differential and scrap the old ones along with the old ring and pinion. Then just go ahead and replace the ring gear and be sure you set the side plates at the right #of turns and you should be good to go. The absolute best way to get a front diff is if the ring gear is still in the front case. This means you don't have to worry about side to side adjustment of the ring gear and if you use the shims for the new pinion, there is no adjustment needed. Hope this doesn't confuse you more but I figured you are a knowledgable guy and can understand what I am saying if you can see the parts in front of you

GOTHCA,I may soon have the first 4.11or 4.44 gearing fwd svx.

Earthworm 08-31-2006 05:22 PM

And we shall call it the "axle biter" :D

poweredx2 09-03-2006 05:21 AM

Would I get more axle problems than normal because of the increase in torque.

TomsSVX 09-03-2006 06:20 AM

Your axles should be fine if they are holding up to your abusive nitrous runs:D :D ... BTW I remember someone had a 4.11 FWD two years ago but I am not sure who it was.... There was a viedo of them doing a huge burnout infront of the shop that they finished it at

Why even bother replacing just the diff when you have to pull the entire tranny anyways - why not just replace the entire tranny?

TomsSVX 09-04-2006 09:24 AM

because there is no such thing as a 4.11 or a 4.44 FWD trans...
