Engine cutting off

First off, thanks for all you folks help. I have another question. Occasionally, while driving, the engine will sputter just a little, and sometimes it will cut off all together. Starts right back up, and no other problems are noticeable. No check engine lights. I'm thinking maybe the fuel filter, so I think we're gonna change that, but figured I'd thrown it out there just in case. Any ideas?

Sounds like your MAF sensor. You can try cleaning it but more than likely it needs to be fixed or replaced. There's info on how to resolder the contacts if you do a search. You could also buy a used one in known working order for $50.00 or less.
The solder fix is quite simple to perform.

+1 on this sounding like the common MAF problem. If you have other Subaru's around (90's, early 00's Legacy's or Imp's) an easy way to troubleshoot is to swap in the MAF. It should look identical with the exception of the color of the tag.

You will lose some high end with the motor, but if the "cutting off" goes away, you found the problem and you can work on fixing or getting the proper MAF.

Man, you may be right. Now that you mention that, I think we had the same thing when the MAF went bad last time, like 5 years ago. Thanks.

I've been having this trouble. Taping the **** out of my lower PVC hoses because I broke them (and it was cracked anyway) seems to have cured the problem.
Something to think about in case the maf thing doesn't work out.
