Stage 1v 4 ECU thing ma jigger

So I found this ECU thing, and I'm reading all about it, trying to understand... just what the hell it does, and why i would want it. I see that it lets you run 87 octane through your engine (gross), but that it also does other magical things?

Why would I want to install this, does it make the car go go better?

Help me understand, you techno people. :(

http://www.ecutune.com/svx-stage1.htm

Basically it corrects the air/fuel ratio giving more power especially at lower RPM's.

pipedream 08-25-2006 04:46 PM

i like more go go.

do you recommend installing it? or does it do more harm than good?

immortal_suby 08-25-2006 04:49 PM

it is good.
stage 2v5 even better.

pipedream 08-25-2006 04:58 PM

judging from the instructions, it would probably take my mechanic like 10 - 15 mins to install this thing right?

did you install your stage one yourself mr. immortal?

i really want more go go

If you're a contortionist then maybe that long. The hard part is loosening the nuts holding the ECU/TCU in place. Best is to lay, upside down, on the seat with your head by the pedals. Maybe make sure you don't work the next day to give your back some time to heal :D

It makes a bigger difference with the auto than it does with a manual tranny.

pipedream 08-25-2006 05:36 PM

hehe.

do you have one in your rig earthworm jim?

I installed one in my '92 pearl a few months ago. Was worried about it passing Utah's strict emissions test last month, but it sailed through with flying colors running on 87 octane. The disappointing thing is that Utah regular gas is 85 octane (I think water is higher octane than that!) so I still have to buy mid-grade.

Installed it myself...was it obvious? :D

A long wrench will help.

immortal_suby 08-26-2006 03:40 AM

installed a few myself also. It is easy.

Suby Fan 08-26-2006 09:21 AM

yep its easy and you support another memeber on here by doing it

pipedream 08-28-2006 10:57 AM

sounds good. i would like some more go-go at lower rpms, and i do have the automatic transmission. i like to think ill put in the 5mt when this tranny goes, but who knows.

Khalil 08-28-2006 02:14 PM

there is so much out there if u search

pipedream 08-28-2006 03:44 PM

yeah but i love talking with you guys so much.

plus, i was kind of fishing for opinions on the actual performance of the mod. its one thing to go to the manufactures site (which i didnt realize was a member), its another thing to get real world performance reviews from ya'll on how it works.

sometimes these things are like those 'special offers' you see in the back of the comic books. "get muscles in 2 days!"

etc.

but it seems like people are saying this is cool for the most part.

the other issue is- while i won't lie to you, im actually very smart, i am also still learning my car mechanics and my car symantecs- so sometimes all the technical jargon on the manufacture pages leaves me going.. "ok wait, now what exactly does it do?"

for people like me, we're more interested in the bottom line/end result.. ie; does it give the car more go-go? :)

right now im trying to look at what the stage II versus the stage I is about- it appears that the Stage II is more geared towards having turbo and nitrous in the car? (which i dont plan on adding)

of course, you're right, i should probably do more research on my own. but where is the fun in that? oh wait.. i get it..

thanks all for the help. :)

If you're gonna go no further than NA I'd just go cheap and stick with stage 1

If you plan on nitrous or forced induction then stage 2 would be a good choice. In the event you went to a supercharger kit LAN would probably work you a deal if you had already purchased stage 2. Also if you do a manual swap then stage 2 should pull smoother up to the higher redline.

Stage 1 is great. I have been through all the NA stages starting with the first and now I have stage 2 version 5 with the Z32 MAF. (I have a nitrous kit in the garage just haven't put it in yet) Stage 2 feels smoother to me over stock or stage 1.

If you can find a Z32 maf on ebay or from a scrapyard then it makes stage 2 that much more affordable.
