Front Jack Stand location ?

Could somebody check my locker and let me know if the location i placed the jack stands is ok ? I have placed it parallel to the point where the regular subaru supplied jack is supposed to go. I am assuming i have placed the stands on the frame rails ?

I have searched the forums, and haven't seen a single picture yet. Lots of descriptions, but no pics.

Thanks
RB

RB,
I like to put mine about 18-24" in front of your choice, across the frame bracket where the bolt can be seen in your first picture, just outboard of the cat. Seems solid, with no undercoating. Others may prefer somewhere else?

edited for clarity.

I would put it more forward as well. I will try to take a picture next time I have mine up on stands. :)

I have always put mine exactly where you have yours and haven't dropped an svx yet.

That location will work just fine. The factory recommended position is on the pinch welds. That is were I position the jack stands. I have mod-ed you pic to show you were. The correct jack stands help in this too. The ones with a smooth support not ones with a deep cut in the center.

Thanks all. I was not sure if the location i put the stands was a safe one. I was planning to crawl under and do a tranny fluid change. Turns out i was able to reach the nut without having to crawl all the way under. Made the change successfully.
Now to hijack my own thread.....
I drained the fluid, i think i got about 6-7qt out. I'm not sure, so i filled up with 6qt of fresh fluid and the dipstick is a mess as usual. I am yet to find an auto tranny that had a dipstick that read the real level of fluid. They all come out as a large smear on the whole stick waaayy past the top mark.. GRRR!!! I'm guessing i've put back enough fluid. Any body else run across this issue ?

Thanks

Thanks Steve, i wanted to place the jacks there too, but wasn't sure about where to put the factory jack to jack the car up to place the jack stands in the location you mentioned ... whew ... did that make any sense ! :)
Oh well, i was able to get the job done.

Hmmm.... i am too remained with the same confusion even with my new swapped 4.44's. I am also having trouble in finding the exact level of the fluid using dip stick. So, whenever i drain the fluid, I will make sure to drain it as long as I can and then fill it wil fresh 6qts.

Yeah as SVX-FF mentioned, the pinch weld points are the proper and preffered locations for jacking and I always jack up at those locations.

Does anyone over here know how to know the exact or atleast approximate proper level of ATF using the dipstick?

To ensure that the car is raised up in a safe manner I strongly suggest using a garage jack to lift the front of the car up. The best point for this is the crossmember directly behind the oil pan. You can lift the whole front of the car up at once. Place the jack stands under the pinch weld to allow maximum room under the car. Slowly lower the car onto the jack stands.
The attached picture shows the two types of stand that I have. The one on the right is the one that I use on the pinch welds. The one on the left has problem with pinch welds in that the pinch weld does not touch the jack stand and the stand crushed into the rocker panel

A good rule of thumb....
1. I start with 4 qts after a drain and filter change.
2. Start the car and with the e-brake and a firm brake pedal slowly go thru the gears pausing for about 30 seconds in each.
3. Return to park and leave engine running, check dipstick.
4. Add fluid as needed.
5. Go for a drive local and freeway to work in fluid and recheck upon return.

You will need to wait a few minutes after adding additional fluid for it to get out of the tube.

There are, I think, three small holes on the tranny dip stick. bottom hole to the middle hole is the add to full when the fluid is cold. <100 deg.
the middle to the top hole is the add to full when the fluid id hot. >100deg.
It is always best to check tranny fluid when it is hot.

Hope this help in some way.
Steve
