02 Sonata Tranny woes! Any thoughts?

02 hyundai Sonata w/ 110k on the dial. A few weeks ago I stopped at a stop light and the car didn't shift all the way down to 1st. got to 3rd and stayed (wouldnt go up to 4th either). Put it in neutral, and back in Drive, still third.

After 2 traffic lights like this, I shut the car off and restarted it. It was fine. In the last 3 weeks or so it has done this maybe 6 times. this morning the shut off turn on trick didnt work so well. I did it 5 times before it would get into first.

Fluid is not low or burnt. Thoughts from any tranny experts out there? I'll have to take it to a mech, but I would like an idea as to what it is, and also talk to the mech...its always better to at least 'Sound' knowledgable :D

Some dirt/debris in ATF causing the valvebody to stick with heat?
I would drain the oil, put fresh flushing oil, keep it running for few minutes, drain again and put new ATF and go from there.

James when the 4EAT gearbox in the SVX recognises a big problem it defaults to what is commonly known as "Get you home" mode.

In the SVX "Get you home" mode the only available forward gear is 3 range. Reverse will work unless, naturally, reverse is part of the problem.

What you have described looks a lot like the Sonata gearbox electronics reverting to a "get you home status"

If you take the car to the dealer they will plug in the diagnostic and that will tell you what the electronics see as the major problem or combination of problems.

[BTW when I got my first SVX I drove it for nearly a year with only 3 range  It was a learning curve for me and it took a while to source a replacement box. They are not too common over here. Just saying that to assure you it will probably drive that way OK for a bit. You would still be advised to get it looked at sooner rather than later. Your gearbox might not run as long as my SVX box did, or it could have a different underlying problem]

Danny what you are saying might be worth a go, but from experience it is more likely a seized high clutch or something mechanical, rather than valves.

Putting it on the dealer diagnostic is probably the safest way forward.

doing some research it looks like it just might be a "A/T control module RELAY"......problem being is no one can tell me where that is, and it isnt anyplace obvious.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

At least its a cheap replacement.
