My widows are getting scratched up!
 

It seems that the little guide that prevents the window from wobbling in and out is worn out...
Anyone know how hard this is to replace?
Is there a make a new one or would I be better going to a dealer and buying one? Are these thing pretty Universal or car specific?

This happens to a lot of SVXs it seems.

OK so I really can't think of anything too helpful to say, but I think window tinters claim tight window gaskets + dirt/grit scratch glass.

I changed mine and I still get scratches, They are not that tough but you have to take out the glass to change them. My advise would be to change the seal at the top of the door when you change the guides. Like Alycone said dirt + glass = scratches. I think the top door seal lets the dirt on the window get in the door and onto the guide pads where they press it into the glass. If you plan on doing it yourself I can walk you through changing the pads.

Some mebers here have said that they have taken off the door pannel and cleaned the felt pad that guides the window. You can use an old toothbrush, or a small wire brush. The pads can also be replaced. Do a search on window polishing and there are a couple threads on how the glass can be polished if not too bad. :)

They get dirt in them. You don't need remove the glass to get them out, just the inside door panel. I used a wire brush and dish soap to clean mine. They look brand new with just a little scrubbing. Dirt and grime, (and probably a bit or organic moss/alge/pond-scum to glue it all together,) tend to build up in the soft fuzz. The pads aren't really felt, but more like velvet.

All you need to remove them are some small pointy tools, like big dental picks and a tiny flat-head screwdriver. Just don't drop them inside your door when they pop out or when you put them back in.

Could you please give me the steps on how to change out the pads (I know how to take the door panel off, so I don't need those steps)

Right now I am upgrading the 6x9's (found a pair of Boston Acoustics in the garage:D , can't even remember where they came from :rolleyes: ) and removing the old tint which faded to became totally transparent :rolleyes: .

Anyone know what replacements cost at a stealership?

Are you going to get the seal for the top of the door? To change the pads you have to take out the glass, at least the outer pads. There are 2 bolts that hold the widow in, put the window 3/4 of the way down and loosen them. Assuming you are doing the drivers side, drop the front down and pull the back up out of the door towards the outside of the window frame. Each pad has a bracket with one bolt holding it in, I found it easier to take out the bracket with the pad to change it. The pads just clip in, make sure you put the bracket back in the same place you should have wear marks in the paint. Now I bought new pads and a new window and I got the scratches again so I would really suggest a new window seal.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I just rolled my window down and removed the inner window guides. You can remove the trim strip along the outside edge of the window and that gives you even more clearance. With the inner guides removed, the glass moves far enough away from the pads that you can just reach behind them and pop 'em out.

The pads look like they've been baked solid, but mine cleaned up really easily.

I have 2 95 SVX both scratching away, I had the dealer clean the guides for me on all 4 windows of each they charged me $50 per car, and then I had the windows buffed $85 per car, they've come up pretty good...my red car like yours was [unfortunately] heavily scared/scratched ..even after all of the above it can still be seen if you look hard for it...

to keep the windows the way they are now every annual service I'll get them to clean the guides, that will give me an indication of whether my specific window wash is working...[the first time I washed under the seal there was a lot of grime and decayed window seal..the less that migrates down there the better they've got to be..]
