spark-system question

I read this at subarusvx.com:

Does the SVX really have no distributor? I thought I heard that the direct-fire system was only brought into Subaru cars starting in the late 90's. Any know what's up (I'm curious!)?

I can confirm there is no distributor on the SVX, and it uses the system as described.
