Roof Repaint?

How much should I expect to pay to repaint the entire roof (oxidation is eating it alive:( )

I would expect you to pay between $250-300 for a really good job. The preparation is what takes the time.

To be done correctly, you have to lift up the rubber moldings at the windshield and rear window and a spacer "rope" type material placed underneath to allow the edge of the paint to go UNDER the molding (far less likely to peel this way). You should also remove the sunroof panel and take off the weatherstripping around it and paint it separately for the same reason.

These panels are much easier to paint and buff out without weatherstripping in the way.

Paint, reinstall weatherstrip and reinstall sunroof panel. In this way you will have no masked edges where the clearcoat is likely to begin peeling. That is the way they did my 96 Polo Green about 3 years ago.

PM me if you need the number of a really expert shop in the Baltimore area (cause the svxcess doesn't accept anything less than perfection) :p

My roof is really bad as well, as is my spoiler and the hood is following. I want to think that I could paint the car myself. I have the gun and the aircompressor etc.. but every time i look at the car I can't figure out how to get the weatherstripping back or off and more importantly to get it back on. Has anyone painted an SVX here? Any alternative resources? Don't mean to hijack your thread just was curious concerning the came problem.

I just painted my SVX a couple of months ago. It was my first paint job and it shows:) however, despite some of the flaws it looks better then the old paint. I have a black car which is easier to mask off then other colors because the trim is black. I did what was mentioned above, I took kite string and wedged it inbetween the trim pieces so the overspray works under the trim. Then afterwords you just slowly pull the string out from underneath the trim. There were a couple of areas that I couldn't lift the trim without damaging it so to do this I just took my time and masked it off the best I could. Since the car is black, the wheel wells and underneath were not a concern, so I just used garbage bags to cover the wheels and walmart bags to cover the exhaust tips. I used old Christmas wrapping paper for the windows and it really seemed to work good, then put masking tape over the Christmas paper in X's like you would to tape a window for a Hurricane so the paper wouldn't rip from the air pressure. When you get the paint, buy some 1/8" and 1/4" wide rolls of tape to do the fine stuff. When you lay the tape down lay long strips down because it's easier to get a straight line. When you pull the tape off, do it slow and pull the tape back and slightly away and the paint for the most part won't lift. After that I took a small bottle of clear coat and went over the edges to help seal them and prevent the edges from peeling back.
My car had alot of rust damage so most of my time was spent cutting out old rust and welding in new metal, after that I sanded it useing 320 grit, then 600, and finally 900. I didn't sand all the way down but took off alot of the top coat. Then wash the car, then use a paint prep to get all the wax, fingerprints, and silicone out of the paint, tape and paint. After the body work was done it took me 2 solid days to do the rest. I used a single stage Urethane paint and where I don't have flaws the paint looks really good with a deep black shine and doesn't require buffing out. If I had to do it all over again I would of practiced with a junker car untill I got the spraying down pat, becuase the errors in my paint are all holding the gun wrong and trying to set the gun. I came across some good doors off of Ebay from a guy named Crazydon or something like that (he's from Savage, MD), good guy and has a lot of SVX parts. This spring I'm gonna put the new doors on, sand it back down and paint it again, but first I'm gonna practice on my Pick up truck since I don't care what it's outcome is. Good luck, it's rewarding even if it doens't come out as good as the expert. Oh, the paint and materials cost a little under $300.00
