Car wont go into Park

Just recently got a 92 SVX. I didn't notice that park doesn'r work. Everything else with the transmission works perfectly. Could this be a shift linkage problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The car won't go IN to park? Can you shift around, but not go to park? Or does it not park when you put the leaver in park?

It will go into park but once there it is as if it were in neutral.

Sounds like the parking gear might be broke...

There's literally a pin that goes into one of the shafts in the tranny that makes the car sit still in "park". Otherwise park=neutral. I doubt it'd really be worth it to have ths fixed, as long as your parking brake is functional.

If it REALLY bothers you it's likely to be expensive.

the person i bought it from said that both of her SVXs did the same thing. Sometimes the parking brake slips if the car is on a steep incline which really pisses me off.

Then one of two things is going on: Either you're not pulling hard enough on it or it needs adjusted to be tighter.

The selector mechanism which engages a locking paul within the transmission, is mechanically cable operated and may be out of adjustment. This should be checked as a first resort.

the person you bought it from needs to stop slamming the car into park

The previous owners are members on this board (Bwana and wannarace928).

WOW!
the only time I ever broke a parking pawl I slammed my '72 T-bird into park @ about 10 mph. I heard this "PLANG" and the car didn't stop. Something about 2 tons+ of car VS a 5/16" piece of tool steel. I dunno just doesn't sound like a fair fight.
