Final drive ratios ?

What i want to know - forgive me for not knowing much about mechanical being an electronic geek!!

The numbers 4.11 / 4.44 etc does it mean higher number = less reves to get to same speed? or something else.

Has someone done the maths to let others know ratios Vs top speeds Vs gear change revs etc?

thanks

Re: Final drive ratios ?

Higher final drive numbers mean MORE revs to to get to the same speed.
On a manual transmission car,( if it had direct 1 to 1 drive) when the car is in gear, the engine turns either 3.90, or 4.11, or 4.44 times for every time the axle turns.
Fifth gear is an overdrive. As is sixth.
The more times the engine turns in relationship to the axle, the more torque you have.Top speed on a 4.44 equipped car at 7000 RPM, with 24.86" tall tires is about 157.83 MPH.On a car with 3.90s it would be about 170.18 MPH, if it had enough HP.This link might help.
