Rear Wheel bearings again!

I need to replace my rear wheel bearings again. I am going to do it myself this time.

I have purchased an OTC hub tamer to do the job..

I am wondering if there has been any consensus on which brand and part number of bearings to use? I have read there is a higher load rated NTN that requires some spacers and also a Timkin brand that some like.

I also see Advance auto offers a Beck/Arnley bearing with a liftime warranty.

Also any suggestions for grease to use on the bearings would also be helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Hello Tom

If your bearings fail often, on low mileage, then there is the possibility that the person who did the first replacement made some mistakes pushing out the old bearing, maybe ovaled the hub, and consequently any bearing you put in there will fail.

However, I suppose you have already taken this into account. When you have the old bearing out it would be a good idea to measure the internal diameter of the hub all around with a vernier calipers to see if it is round and true.

Assuming it is round and true, then you have one problem less. What you will need to do is ensure you have new seals, that they are fitted properly, and that the bearing is packed with the proper grease before you fit the seals.

This brings up another important point; if you have already read a bit about the repeat failings, then you may be aware that the grease the bearings come packed with is not the correct fitment grease, it is for storage only to prevent rust. You must remove this packing grease and replace with the correct grade of grease. I can't remember what grade this is, but all you need do is ask for it when you are buying the bearings and seals, the shop will know.

Last point Tom, you can read up about the smaller NTN bearing, part numbers and all, on this thread: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=27924

Have fun,

Joe:)
