Rear/Mid engine SVX

So just to get the ball rolling, anyone ever consider the possibilty? I mean who here really uses thier back seat? I know the subject was brought up before but never went anywhere? I was wondering if there might be someone on the board who might have atempted or tried to do one. I know theres a hell of a lot of technical difficulties to over come but man, that would be a bad ass SVX in my opinion. Anyone else have an opinion? Is it sacreligous to think these thoughts? Think about it, take a FWD model, yank out the seats, cut out the trunk and add more metal to make a rear frame to support the weight, mount the motor to the frame work making sure to line up the axleshafts, replumb all your lines including radaitor, vacumm to the brake booster ect.ect.ect. So who thinks it an effort in futility of a decent pondering?

It's a bad move in general. The suspension geometry is mapped for an AWD car with a front engine setup. It'd just be good for going forward, and maybe not even that. Better off just dropping a LSx motor and a live axle rear if you wanted to do that.

Hmmm maybe a Fwd SVX with another FWD engine and tranny in the back now that would be interesting :)

You would basically have to cut everything off aft of the front seats. A fire wall would have to be made, unibody strengthening, and then have a lot of driveline components and suspensions custom made. This would be impossible to do unless you're swimming in cash. You would at least need sponsoring to fund the project and a little more than the basic engineering skills to design it properly. IIRC, someone tried this to a 300ZX in the UK and it cost over 40k (60K in US?).

I'm not swimming in cash but i didn't know if it has ever been atemped by anyone who is? I got to thinking about it more last night and the imposabilitys of the whole deal were aparent. I was never concidering doing it to my daily driver but i've just had a curious wondering if anyone has seen it or hured about it on an SVX.

I was using the term "you" generally, as in anyone/someone. :)

This was discussed recently in MI:)

It would be a terrible idea. Other than cost, you would loose all that makes the car go and handle. It would be very very unique, thats all.

It's been done, on a CRX hatch though.

I'm pretty sure it was Road & Track.

The car was pretty fast if I remember correctly. It was set up very "backyard garage" style. Engine RPM was matched through the tires contact with the road

There's been a couple of 5th Gen Cutlass supremes (88-97) with twin engines. One had the stock 3.1 up front with a L67 (3.8SC-GTP motor) in back. Stock numbers combined on those engines at the crank is about 400hp and 470lb-ft torque and Ran 13.2 in the quarter mile. They cut/chopped/welded in the front of an olds toranado and all suspension components. Linked up the throttle cables to match as well as being able to cut off either of the engines to run on only one drivetrain. Not much cost involved cuz they did everything themselves.

Another one I remember but can't seem to find anymore is someone swapped in a 3800 series II up front in a 93 cutlass supreme, turboed running 12-15 lbs of boost and then swapped in the L67 in back with smaller pulley. Combined crank hp on that one was 650 and 750lb-ft torque. Don't remember if they ran it at the track but same basic process was involved.

That would be a hell of a crazy SVX. In all I think that would be the way to go, screw twin turbo, I got twin engines. Not going to ever do it but if anyone wants to atempt it keep us posted! Maybe if i find another parts car i'll do a backyard hackjob on one and just play around with it. Who knows might be a hell of a project for someone with the money, and alot of SVX know how.
