Do you have reverse?
Did you remove the valve body and forget to reconnect the manual valve into the shift lever that comes through the side of the box.?:)

If you have forward and reverse, then the manual valve is connected ok. This is the valve at the top middle of the pic

Is this where the connector is or out side the box?

Yes that is the manual valve, it selects 1st and reverse, but if you have both of these gears, the valve is connected.

The other thing that can prevent it from shifting is no speed sensor signal.

well there is a connector under the hood, it is right under the intake manifold and on the inside of the connector it is green????? i can not find anywhere where it goes.

i found out where that connector goes, and it connects to a speed sensor? on the front diff. right behind the dipstick...but i kinda have a problem the sensor that is in the new front diff. that i just put in the car does not have a connector piece, and the one on my old front diff. does, is there any way in can combine the two? and would this make it now want to shift out of first?

Yes no speed sensor no change. To solve the different sensor question, we need to ask a LHD man like OT.:)

Re: tranny wont shift?

I think it would take both speed sensors to be defective for there to be no gears. Even then wouldn't it change if it got to red line?
Heres what a manual says about the older trans...

If shift solenoids #1 or #2 malfunction, the TCU
deactivates the other. This results in either 3rd gear
or Reverse (when selected).
If duty solenoid “A” fails, line pressure goes to
maximum.
If duty solenoid “B” fails, the torque converter lock-up
will not occur.
If shift solenoid #3 malfunctions, the overrunning clutch
is always “ON” and there will be engine braking during
deceleration.
If duty solenoid “C” should fail, the 4WD control will be
set to maximum and the rear wheels will always be

Could it be that it has reverse and third Perhaps?

Re: tranny wont shift?

no it is def. reverse and first because i can only go about 10 mph... so i cant be 3rd.... i did check the big fat wireing harness that connects from the tranny and it was not snapped in all the way.... i didnt take it for a drive after i snapped it in but i still need that speed sensor reguardless.... i just need to get this thing fixed.... it has been nothing but trouble, because i was doing it on the ground in like 10 degree weather

There is a difference in the two types of speed sensors, the SVX uses a Hall Effect unit, three wires.
The other boxs use an inductive unit, two wires.
You have to change the sensors over, to use the Hall Effect one.

Re: tranny wont shift?

ok so i talked to a subaru mechanic today and he said that where i took that sensor out at,on the front diff, there should be like a washer thing in there, he said i can pull that out and the speed sensor off my svx front diff. should screw right in to the new front diff. is this right?

and i was thinking that this is the problem for it not shifting because the TCU has to see some sort of speed to be able to shift i would think?!?!

That seems to be how it is changed over. Yes it has to have the speed sensor signal, to change gears.
