Broken Gear Shift Linkage??

Last weekend, I reversed out of a parking spot and went to put the car in Drive, but the gear shift moved freely past D and into 2. The shifter moved without resistance through the gate but the gears didn't change.
I drove home in second gear, parked it and shut the engine off, but then of course it wouldn't start again because it was still in second, even though the shifter was in park.
I managed to get it back to Park by manually moving the selector cam at the tansmission housing.
I'm pretty certain either the cable has broken or the linkage at the shifter has come off.
I have it dismantled inside the car up to a point but don't want to go any further because I don't have the shop manual.
Is anybody here able to scan the instructions and diagrams from the manual for me, or if you've done the job, maybe expalain how you did it.

I have any shifter parts you may need plus the manual if you want.

It must be the cable. Never heard of the problem happening to anyone else though. Still strange that it was able to go right into 2nd as I always thought 2nd is locked out unless you press the button and that is controlled on the shifter itself...not in the tranny.
