Remote Radar

I am thinking of fitting a remote radar detector. The Whistler 3300 looks nice. I would fit the remote radar antenna behind the grill. It's better up high I know, but the remote antenna unit is too bulky to mount discreetly anywhere else.

However, the laser sensor it comes with is recommended for interior fitting behind the screen[because the lens looks fore and aft] Not being bothered about rear protection, I would prefer to put it near the number plate where the gun is aiming. However, the model is not listed as waterproof, and recommended for interior fit with a measly 9' of cable.

My idea is it should work fitted into that crescent shaped bit of plastic across the front grill, and could be sealed into it in a waterproof fit. Anybody any idea if the lens will be able to discern the signal through the plastic??

Joe, this is opinion only, but. Yes, I would expect it to be able to discern through the plastic. Lasar detectors do fine when mounted inside of the car and discern the signal through the winshield glass.

Like I said, just opinion, not my field of expertise.

Joe,

Here is an idea.

Go to a GOOD camera store. Buy a small case used to take 35mm cameras underwater. The front of these cases are optical quality so the camera's lens can take a clear picture. Be sure to bring the pieces that you want to put inside the case to the store to check fitment, and drive your SVX there to see if the case will fit under the hood. Some of these cases are like a zip lock bag with an optical lens at one end. Good Luck.

Thanks Christopher and Larry.

I reckon the plastic may diffuse the signal, but it should still be discernable to the pickup.

Regards the waterproof housing, your solution may be worth trying, but those camera housings are sealed units, so I would still have to put a waterproof gland where the cable exits though. Shows you are thinking all right. Better get the gear first, and then worry about the install.

Joe:)
