Sorry to hear about that.

Get a new/used front and rear 4.11 diff, maybe?

ensteele 12-28-2004 04:21 PM

Oh no. Is she dead? Or is she just making noise? :(

NapaBavarian 12-28-2004 04:55 PM

Oh my gosh! I'm really sorry to hear that Ally! Is there any specualtion as to how your diff broke? Was it leaking fluid before? You'd know because diff fluid smells really strong w/ a distinct odor.

I hope your SVX gets fixed soon!

She went from fine to dead instantly - I was going up a hill (in Woodenville) at highway speeds when there was a big thunk and then a continuous clunk-shudder-grind-clunk-shudder-grind as I pulled over so I called a tow truck. Ick.

Not entirely unexpected - the tranny has been rebuilt twice in the last 3yrs and resealed 6months ago because tranny fluid was leaking into the front dif. I kinda assumed the dif would be the next to go.

Should I rebuild the tranny again (tranny #4)? Decisions...

(No, I'm not quite at the point of giving up yet.)

:(

:D

I'd look into replacing that differential since the tranny has recieved a lot of attention over the past few years. Allthough, if ATF was getting into your diff then there's also the chance that diff fluid is now mixed in w/ you ATF. Perhaps Smart Service could swap the diff for you. I'd also ask them for thier opinion of how you should handle this before you proceed. The dealership will want to install a new tranny.... I've lost faith in Dealership shops. The tech at Chaplin's in Eastgate (Belllevue) is really cool and takes my calls to answer quick tehcnical questions about my Suby though. The Kirkland Subaru techs are the ones that ruined all thier chances though.

Good luck Ally, NWSVX wouldn't be the same w/o you. I really really really hope you pull through this! :)

My car's at Smart's awaiting her fate. I'm keeping her even if I have to do a flintstone conversion. I cant decide between replacing the entire aamco-cursed tranny or just the front dif.

LMFAO!

ensteele 12-29-2004 12:51 PM

Ally

I would check with Smart Service and see what they think. I would go with their thoughts on what to do. The would know what is best for SU. :( Good luck with her. Keep us informed.

Next week Smarts is installing my new transmission. :)
