How to replace small speedo gear
Well installed a new trans in the svx last week and the speedo doesn't work. Found out the small gear is missing teeth seen here.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psef8d048d.jpg First you need to remove the wheel and the axle nut. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psb7a6d57a.jpg Then unbolt the ball joint from the hub which is 14mm on both sides of the bolt. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps9f5816ff.jpg After that punch out the roll pin from the axle and side it over to the left, undo the 14mm bolt locking in the axle plate and spin the circle plate out. Now would be a good time to replace the axle seal if yours is bad. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps3d338e09.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psce226dfd.jpg Then you can inspect your gear and worm gear. If your worm gear is ok then you can be relieved because that one needs the bearing pressed off to replaced. If the small one is damaged take a flathead screwdriver and pry the snap ring off as you wont need it any more because it is IMPOSSIBLE to get back on doing it this way. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps1b0dd8cc.jpg So since you cannot get a snap ring back in there I used an E clip instead slightly modified. All I did was get a size smaller than the snap-ring and used a dremmel with a tapered cone end and enlarged it to fit the cone diameter/ground the outside edge slightly. Took pictures after it was installed so I borked that shot. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psd848f938.jpg After that put everything back together and take it for a spin and hopefully your speedometer/odometer works again.:D |
Re: How to replace small speedo gear
Awesome write up, thanks! A quick note to add; remember to mark the sun dial/axle seal retainer before removing it and count the number of turns it takes to get it out. It sets the preload on the axle bearing, so getting it back where it came from is important.

Re: How to replace small speedo gear
That's the right side (passenger) correct?

Re: How to replace small speedo gear
Yes...............

Re: How to replace small speedo gear
I was told this wasn't possible :<
$500 and a tranny pull later... Great write up too, btw it's hard to tell through the gloves. Is that your nail polish in the first pic? |
Re: How to replace small speedo gear
No its the wifes nail polish. And technically this isnt possible the correct way which is to pull and split the case. Its a tight fit and if you got a small enough finger you can squeeze it beside the bearing, took a couple of trys getting the gear back on but it will go on so be patient. I also forgot to mention I pulled the exhaust off for more room but its optional.

Re: How to replace small speedo gear
My speedo works 99.9% of the time but once every rare while it will drop to zero for a second and then bounce right back again. I hope this little gear isn't the issue because that looks like a real *****.

Re: How to replace small speedo gear
A few years after I had the gear replaced, I developed a similar symptom. A quick cleaning of the speed sensor fixed it. The lubricating grease had become thick and sticky.

Re: How to replace small speedo gear
I also replaced the grease in the speed sensor also as mine was like syrup.

Re: How to replace small speedo gear
Whereabouts would this thick and sticky sensor be?
|
Re: How to replace small speedo gear
The speed sensor by the diff dipstick. Unbolt it with a 17mm wrench, theres a shaft that is inside it and the grease gets dirty and dry.
