help!!!! No start!

Okay.

I have a hard starter and read the posts this morning. Here is what happened

Changed the coolant temperature sensor.
Cranking, fully charged and linked to the SUV.
I can hear the fuel pump hum when I turn the system on.
Checked the fuel lines by the filter and coolant tank. There is fuel.
Tried taking the battery terminal off for 10 min to clear codes
Car parked on a 15 degree driveway. Nose up.

Alas! No start!

The problems have started after the great Midwest blizzard. She starts and goes then did this to me today.

I was cranking and really trying. On and off before replacing the sensor upon finding that an advance auto parts down from me had the parts.

Tried taking the plug off the sensor. The fans turned on.

I'm at wits end and I'm stuck 45 miles out . Need to get home.

Thank you in advance to fantastic forum Gods! :o

So the engine turns but it does not catch?

What's this about an SUV?

Did you leave anything unplugged?

How can you hear the fuel pump hum? Is it not factory? Is the rear seat down? Do you hear the characteristic "fuel burble"?

Have you tried putting the old sensor back in?

Re: help!!!! No start!

Yup. I had the rear seat down.

No did not replace the old one. It looked pitted and crusted.

Is there a way to diagnose fuel pump issues?

Thanks!

The SUV was for charging the battery due to too much attempts at cranking

Is there a better way to diagnose fuel pump issues?

NikFu S. 02-13-2011 02:56 PM

If you can hear the burble and 3 relay clicks it's working.

I would think it is more likely something else is wrong. If it is at all possible, turn the car around (using gravity) and try to start it.
If it is indeed not getting fuel, whatever is left in the lines will dribble into the injectors and it should stumble to life for a moment.

If you do that and it does not, I would try putting the old sensor back in to eliminate that as a variable.

Check your hoses and wires.

Far as "diagnosing" the fuel pump, the easiest way I've tried is by jumping the fuel pump relay.

This might be a stupid q, but is there a chance to flood the car with fuel?

I'll try on a flat surface...

Re: help!!!! No start!

Yes it is possible. I've done that. It took a whole day of sitting for it to clear up. I also happened to replaced the battery and "clean" the crank sensor while it was down, so... hard to say exactly.

Re: help!!!! No start!

Does the cleaning of the crank sensor require removing the alternator?

I have to wait on the flat surface.... Batts dead. Girl had to take the other car...

Thanks nick. Any other suggestions are accepted.

NikFu S. 02-13-2011 03:16 PM

It is possible that even though the voltage seems normal, it may not be getting enough cranking amps.

Removing the alternator does make the job easier but I do not believe it is required. It's been about 4 years since I've done it.

I don't know what you have access to, but if you can get a jack and stands under the rear give that a shot. (hope you have the factory wheel chocks)

Re: help!!!! No start!

Update: rolled to a flat surface: No start.

Replaced the new coolant sensor with the oldone and vice versa: FAIL
Cranked hard continously: Fail

Parked it in a garage and far from home. Friend says he will try tomorrow. Im still open to suggestions...........

Is there a check for fuel flow?

NikFu S. 02-13-2011 10:15 PM

Has it been running pretty bad recently? Is that why you replaced the sensor?

Re: help!!!! No start!

Nope. I was reading on the forums on the probable causes of no starts, and figured I can cross this off the List.

I just recalled before this incident that the car was running on the highway for an hour, and as i got off to the ramp, the car shuddered like a wet dog shaking of water momentarily, and went back to normal.

it was a hard shudder, i thought the engine was going off the mounts.Still, drove to walmart, dined at a resto, all stops of 20 minutes in between, and it started each time.

It was after I parkedon the driveway on an incline for good 5 hours when it just failed to start.

Im at wits end....

Oh, Ihave a 94....

Re: help!!!! No start!

Correlation doesn't equal causation but if the hill was the problem jacking up the rear of the car would likely allow it to start, even if for a moment due to residual fuel in the lines. I think this would indicate a failing pump or fpr.
There are too many causes for non-starts and they range from the embarrassingly simple to the prohibitively expensive.
If this were my car the next step I would take is to jump the fuel modulator, instructions can be found in one of my recent threads. I'd link you but I'm on my phone, nav is difficult.

Re: help!!!! No start!

Someone suggested starter fluid. Is this altogether advisable?

What is it anyway?

NikFu S. 02-16-2011 06:58 PM

I was actually thinking that earlier. It shouldn't hurt anything. Go for it.
Spray it right into the TBs.

It's just a volatile mixture of fluid. For you it will simulate having a small amount of fuel injected and will tell us whether you have a fuel versus spark/sensor/other issue.

I'm still banking on it being a sensor. Have you tried to start it today? Whether it is flooded or if the pump is going south it may shudder to life at least until you turn it off again, at which point it may again go into hibernation.
